Luis Enrique has cautioned Paris Saint-Germain against falling into a “trap” as they prepare to face Liverpool, who are keen to progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday.
PSG make their way to Anfield with a 2-0 advantage from their first-leg clash in Paris last week.
In that match, Liverpool struggled to find the mark, failing to register a single shot on target while Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia found the net for Luis Enrique’s team.
Despite PSG’s strong performance at the Parc des Princes and their penalty shootout victory over Liverpool in last season’s round of 16, Luis Enrique is keeping his guard up ahead of the encounter on Merseyside.
Liverpool are known for their ability to mount extraordinary comebacks in European competitions and are eager to turn around a challenging season by making it to the final four of this prestigious tournament.
“You have to be extremely cautious; there are traps you can fall into,” Luis Enrique told the media on Monday.
“People say, ‘you won the first leg convincingly and you were far superior to the other team’. That may be true, but the dynamics of a football match can shift quickly.
“You need to be vigilant, pay attention to the little things, and be prepared, as you could concede a goal in the first half, leaving the tie open.”
With a two-goal cushion, PSG might be tempted to adopt a more defensive stance as they aim to conclude the tie.
However, Luis Enrique has no plans to play it safe, instead urging his squad to pursue victory.
“We’re going out to win the match, as we always do. Liverpool will come out firing, but I need my players to understand that we’ll face challenges—they’re not going to make it easy,” he said.
“Despite what has happened so far in the tie, I expect it to be a tightly contested match.”
PSG will also have to face the passionate Anfield crowd, but Luis Enrique believes they can rise to the occasion amidst the intimidating atmosphere.
“We understand how tough it is to play in a venue like Anfield, but it also serves as a motivation for us because we want to play our game, overcome the challenge, and secure the victory,” he added.
