Atletico Madrid welcomes Barcelona to a packed Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final, striving to secure a spot in the semi-finals for the first time in nine years. Following this pivotal clash, they will shift their focus to the Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad.
Following a 2-0 triumph in the first leg at Camp Nou, Atletico’s captain Koke, who emerged from the academy and participated in the Champions League finals in 2014 and 2016—both of which were reached by overcoming Barcelona in the quarter-finals—recognised the significance of the upcoming week.
“This match could indeed become a part of our history,” Koke stated during a press conference on Monday. “Reaching the semi-finals after such a long wait would be remarkable and right now, we aren’t thinking about the Cup final just yet. We must approach this game as if it were a final.”
At the age of 33, Koke reminisced about the crucial goal he scored in 2014 that sent Barcelona packing.
“I’ve relived that moment many times,” he admitted. “When you face matches of this calibre, those memories energise you.”

While Atletico’s performance in the cups has been commendable this season, their La Liga campaign has dwindled. Following three consecutive defeats to Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla, their title aspirations appear all but extinguished, although manager Diego Simeone has rotated his squad in those matches to prioritise cup competitions.
Barcelona leads the league with 79 points, sitting nine ahead of Real Madrid. Villarreal occupies third place with 61 points, while Atletico holds fourth with 57 points, 11 points above fifth-placed Real Betis as they approach the final seven matches with a Champions League spot virtually secured for next season.
Barcelona, down by two goals, heads to a venue where Atletico has suffered only three losses across all competitions this season, none by more than a single goal.
“It’s only natural for them to feel optimistic. However, my teammates are absolutely eager to perform well – they respect the opposition, yet are motivated to win,” Koke remarked. “Barcelona are a team that can put you under intense pressure, and we need to show the resilience to maintain possession.”
Atletico is seeking their first domestic cup triumph since 2013 against Real Sociedad on Saturday.
