On a Sunday afternoon, a stalemate of 0-0 between FC Volendam and Feyenoord allowed PSV to secure the Eredivisie title for the 27th time in their history.
For PSV to be crowned champions, Feyenoord needed to clinch a victory, but anything less would seal PSV’s 27th Eredivisie title. After PSV’s thrilling 4-3 victory against FC Utrecht on Saturday increased their lead over Feyenoord to 18 points, the Sunday encounter became pivotal in the title contest.
Feyenoord’s manager Robin van Persie faced two last-minute changes to his lineup, with Anel Ahmedhodzic and Anis Hadj Moussa sidelined due to injury. Gonçalo Borges and Thijs Kraaijeveld stepped in to fill the gaps.
The opening 20 minutes were tense and uneventful, with only Raheem Sterling and Borges attempting to threaten the goal. Gradually, FC Volendam emerged from their defensive shell, creating some presence near Feyenoord’s penalty area. However, their efforts fell short, with Aurelio Oehlers and Anthony Descotte failing to deliver anything substantial.
As the second half commenced, Feyenoord desperately sought a penalty when Ayase Ueda went down, but referee Allard Lindhout dismissed their appeals and instead issued a yellow card to Robin van Persie for his protests.
It wasn’t until the 60-minute mark that both teams began to create more significant chances, with Descotte testing goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther at his near post, while Jakub Moder forced a fine save from Kayne van Oevelen to maintain parity.
Aymen Sliti nearly gifted Feyenoord the lead with just ten minutes to go, but he squandered an open header. In a dramatic late chance, Volendam came close to scoring, but Wellenreuther thwarted Benjamin Pauwels in the 88th minute.
In injury time, Ayase Ueda took a rare shot on goal, directing a tricky header that Van Oevelen managed to keep out, preserving the deadlock at 0-0 as PSV edged closer to their title triumph.
With Volendam successfully holding off Feyenoord, PSV celebrated their 27th league title as Feyenoord’s deficit to the Eindhoven side widened to 17 points.
