Lyon secured a 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final on Saturday, with Melchie Dumornay scoring a decisive goal in the 82nd minute, giving the record eight-time champions an advantage in the tie.
The French side opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Kadidiatou Diani found the net, but Arsenal quickly responded with a penalty converted by Mariona Caldentey to level the score.
Lyon’s coach Joe Montemurro, who previously managed Arsenal for four years and led them to a Women’s Super League title, marked his return with a win, even as his side endured relentless pressure from Arsenal in the second half until Dumornay’s crucial strike.
Arsenal squandered numerous opportunities, while Lyon remained resolute defensively, leaving Renee Slegers’ team with plenty of work to do in the return leg on April 27 if they are to stop the French club from reaching their 12th final in this competition.
The match began positively for Lyon as Diani was played through on the right wing, where she skillfully slotted her shot past Arsenal keeper Manuela Zinsberger into the far bottom corner.
Initially, the assistant’s flag was raised for offside, igniting cheers from the home fans, but the excitement quickly turned to dismay as VAR determined that Diani was onside by a matter of inches.
Arsenal’s clearest chance prior to half-time came when an unmarked Frida Maanum headed just wide at the far post.
Lyon nearly extended their lead shortly thereafter, as Dumornay attempted a breathtaking lob from nearly 40 metres out, only for her effort to ricochet off the crossbar.
As half-time approached, Arsenal had another opportunity to equalise when Leah Williamson’s header struck the bar, and penalty appeals for a foul on Katie McCabe in the box were waved away by the referee.
The home side came out aggressively in the second half, creating two early scoring chances, with Alessia Russo’s attempt cleared off the line and Beth Mead’s header going wide.
Their persistence eventually bore fruit from a corner when Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler misjudged a punch, making contact with Williamson’s head instead. After a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty.
Caldentey confidently stepped up and sent Endler the wrong way, slotting her penalty into the bottom corner in the 78th minute, eliciting a roar of approval from the home crowd.
However, any aspirations of a comeback were dashed just four minutes later when Dumornay, showing her incredible pace, sprinted past the Arsenal defence and finished to secure a 2-1 lead, quieting the 40,000 fans at The Emirates Stadium.
