Spain’s LaLiga is set to have a minimum of five clubs participating in next season’s Champions League following Lazio’s exit from the Europa League on Thursday, while Athletic Club advanced to the semi-finals.
LaLiga secured the second of two European Performance Spots awarded by UEFA, recognising associations that demonstrate the “best overall performance by their clubs” in UEFA competitions.
Initially, England’s Premier League was the first to attain an additional spot in Europe’s premier tournament, supplementing the four places awarded to the top four clubs in the domestic league.
