Calls for struggling Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin to step aside and usher in a ‘new era’ are intensifying, drawing parallels to Leon Cameron’s departure from the GWS Giants in 2022.
The winless Demons faced yet another setback over the weekend, hitting a 13-year low for the club after their loss to Essendon during the AFL’s Gather Round.
During a segment on Nine’s Footy Furnace following the latest defeat, Tom Morris highlighted the similarities between the Demons’ current situation and that of the Giants three years ago.

“The comparison between the Giants in 2022 under Leon Cameron is quite apparent,” he said. “Cameron had been in charge for nine seasons, and Goodwin is in his ninth with Melbourne right now. Cameron was generally deemed successful.”
“Currently, the situation at Melbourne suggests we might be witnessing the conclusion of an era, regardless if Goodwin remains in place. Significant changes are likely to occur around him.”
“There remains an opportunity to rescue this era if the right decisions are made promptly.”
Goodwin has been leading the club since 2017, enjoying notable successes, including a premiership victory, but the momentum seems to have shifted unfavourably.
Essendon legend James Hird asserted that the decision ultimately hinges on whether the club believes they can reach premiership heights again.
“What Simon needs to contemplate is whether he thinks he can guide this team to another premiership. If he believes he can, he should stay; if not, perhaps a break is in order,” he remarked.

“He’s only 48 and has a bright coaching future ahead, but it’s essential for him to engage in discussions with the club’s leadership,” Hird added. “He must determine how to lift the team back up the ladder, as this influences decisions across the entire football department.”
Jimmy Bartel acknowledged that “time can run out” for coaches, though he believes Goodwin will land on his feet in future positions.
Melbourne will have another shot at securing their first win of the season when they face Fremantle this Saturday at the MCG.
