Unai Emery, the manager of Aston Villa, addressed the media in his latest press conference as the team gears up for their FA Cup showdown against Preston North End.
The last time Villa lifted the FA Cup was in 1957. They have reached the semi-finals a total of ten times but have failed to progress beyond that stage, while they have been runners-up on four occasions.
With a record of seven FA Cup triumphs, Emery is aiming to secure an eighth victory this season. When asked about the strength of his current squad in comparison to previous seasons, he reflected on the team’s journey.
“Two years ago, we finished strong. We drew with Liverpool and won against Brighton at home. Last season, we ended on a bit of a low note, lacking energy and losing our final match away to Crystal Palace,” he noted.
“This year, my vision and our strategy for the remainder of the season is to finish with full energy.”
Emery then shared some team updates, confirming that one midfielder will definitely be unavailable this weekend.
“I believe the only player uncertain for tomorrow is Ross Barkley. Of course, we’ll be training this afternoon, and with players such as Emi Martinez, Leon Bailey, and Andres Garcia, we will assess their physical condition and hope to maintain the squad we’ve had available for the last several months.”
The recent international break came as a timely respite for Emery’s side, and he expressed that he and his team have made the most of it.
“We had a productive break. Naturally, we were still working, focusing on improving with the players we had available to us.
“Not many players remained, as most were away with their national teams. We also used this time to conduct an in-depth analysis of our previous matches to enhance our collective and individual performances.
“From this point onward, hopefully until the conclusion of the season, we aim to play for as long as possible.”
The Spanish manager continued by discussing the inconsistency that his team has experienced in the Premier League this season, as their hopes for European qualification seem to be fading.
“The season is all about the consistency we can achieve, yet each moment presents its own challenges.
“Right now, we find ourselves in a different phase, where we must be demanding of ourselves both individually and collectively, as we have fallen short of our expectations and ambitions for the season.
“We’ve conceded too many goals this season; while we’ve shown flashes of consistency, it hasn’t been adequate. We’ve only lost one home match in the Premier League, but we’ve drawn far too many.
“This indicates some level of consistency, yet not enough, as we should not be drawing as many matches. Today, Friday 28th March, marks a crucial moment in how we will approach the final months of our competitions.
“Our aim is, of course, to improve and strengthen our defensive capabilities, just as we have done in the past.”
