The captain of Newcastle United, Bruno Guimarães, dedicated the team’s impressive 4-1 triumph over Manchester United in the Premier League to manager Eddie Howe, who was absent from the match due to illness.
Howe, aged 47, was admitted to hospital on Friday after experiencing discomfort for several days, meaning he was not present on the sidelines as Newcastle achieved their first league double against United since the 1930-31 season.
“When we stepped onto the pitch, we made it clear that we were playing for him (Howe),” Guimarães stated in an interview with Premier League Productions.
“He has been instrumental to our success; his contribution has been incredible. We certainly felt his absence during training this week.”
“We hope this victory brings him joy and that he’ll be back for our next match. It’s been a challenging week for him.”
Newcastle’s assistant manager, Jason Tindall, revealed that Howe congratulated the players following their win.
“He managed to watch the game, and I’m confident that the performance would have brought a smile to his face,” Tindall remarked.
“You certainly feel the absence of your leader, but it’s a testament to the entire team for stepping up — it’s no small feat to fill those big shoes.”
Next up for Newcastle is a home match against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
