Borussia Dortmund’s slim chances of securing UEFA Champions League qualification remain alive following a commanding 4-1 triumph over SC Freiburg at the Europa-Park Stadion. This victory ensures that Niko Kovac’s record in the Bundesliga remains characterised by wins and losses only, with no draws to his name (W4, L4).
With a potential top-six spot on the line, Freiburg started with intent, and Vincenzo Grifo was left frustrated just eight minutes into the match when his shot inside the box was expertly blocked.
Florian Muller had to stay sharp, denying a header from Daniel Svensson at the opposite end, while Freiburg felt hard done by after having two penalty appeals turned down.
After a shaky start, Dortmund found their rhythm as the first half progressed, slowly resembling the formidable title challengers from previous seasons. They took the lead ten minutes before the break.
A swift move down the right saw Julian Ryerson outpace Jordy Makengo, delivering a cross that inadvertently deflected off Max Beier, landing perfectly for Karim Adeyemi. Exhibiting his signature nimble footwork, he shifted to the left side of the goal and curled a shot into the far corner, leaving Muller grasping at air.
Dortmund harnessed the momentum gained from that goal into the second period, putting themselves firmly on track to achieve a seventh consecutive victory over Freiburg by a significant margin, doubling their lead within five minutes of the restart.
This time, Beier’s involvement was clear-cut as he received the ball in midfield and sliced through the Freiburg defence with a brilliant pass to Carney Chukwuemeka. Despite being closely tracked by Makengo, he managed to unleash a shot that deflected off Philipp Lienhart and left Muller stranded.
The frustration for Freiburg only mounted as Dortmund extended their lead to three after Chukwuemeka threaded a pass to Julian Brandt, who selflessly squared the ball for Serhou Guirassy to tap in, effectively sealing the contest.
Further humiliation awaited Freiburg, with Ryerson deftly evading his marker to deliver a cross for the oncoming Jamie Gittens, who headed home from close range.
As the match approached its conclusion, Freiburg did manage a consolation goal, with Maximilian Eggestein unleashing a stunning strike into the top-left corner – a goal that was entirely out of sync with an otherwise woeful second-half display from the Breisgau Brazilians.
In the end, this was a straightforward win for Dortmund, bringing them to within striking distance of fourth-placed Mainz, who had infamously thwarted their title hopes with a last-day draw two years prior.
This result is sure to fuel their ambitions as they face a pivotal trio of fixtures ahead, including two Champions League clashes against LaLiga leaders Barcelona, sandwiched around a Klassiker showdown with Bayern, making all three matches potentially season-defining.
