Levante secured a vital 2-0 win over Sevilla, greatly enhancing their chances of avoiding relegation from LaLiga, marking only their second victory in 11 head-to-head contests.
Levante aimed to build on their important 1-0 triumph against Getafe from Monday, and they nearly capitalised on a significant opportunity in the opening minutes of this tense relegation clash.
Referee José Sánchez initially awarded a penalty after it appeared Iván Romero had been brought down in the box by Nemanja Gudelj. However, upon review, replays revealed minimal contact, leading VAR to overturn the decision.
This incident served as a wake-up call for Sevilla, as Levante pressed on to find the opening goal.
Carlos Espí almost completed a fluid attack, but his low finesse shot was expertly saved by Odysseas Vlachodimos. Finally, Levante found the back of the net in the 38th minute.
Jon Ander Olasagasti played a key role with a beautifully weighted pass that fell to Romero, who unleashed a powerful half-volley to give his team a well-deserved 1-0 lead as they approached half-time.
Sevilla had nowhere to go but up after a lacklustre first half. They had their best chance just after the break, as Lucien Agoumé perfectly picked out Rubén Vargas with a precise through ball, but Vargas squandered the opportunity, sending his left-footed effort soaring over the bar.
Los Nervioneses pressed forward, with Akor Adams next to test the Levante defence, firing a powerful long-range attempt just above the crossbar.
In contrast, Levante had a superb opportunity to extend their lead against the flow of the game in the 68th minute. However, a brilliant last-minute tackle from Andrés Castrín denied Espí.
Luis García opted for all five of his substitutes during the second half, including Alexis Sánchez, as Sevilla searched for an equaliser. They thought they had a penalty when Pablo Martínez seemed to handle the ball in the box.
However, VAR rightfully dismissed the penalty shout, and Levante put the game to bed in stoppage time when Ugo Raghouber charged forward and squared the ball for Romero to tap in easily.

For Sevilla, this defeat leaves them just a single point above the relegation zone, while Levante has moved within two points of the Rojiblancos with their fifth home win of the season.
