The second chapter of Connor Watson’s tenure with the Sydney Roosters appears destined to conclude sooner than expected, as the State of Origin utility has been granted permission to explore opportunities outside the club.
Now 29, Watson kickstarted his NRL career with the Roosters ten years ago, before spending four seasons with the Newcastle Knights and returning to Bondi in 2022.
Since his return, he has evolved into a representative player, transitioning into a ball-playing utility forward and predominantly playing at hooker for the Roosters throughout much of last season.
With the recent signing of Reece Robson on a long-term contract and Watson set to be off the market at the end of next season, Roosters management has opened the door for his exit.

“He has been given the go-ahead to seek opportunities with other clubs, even though he is under contract until the end of the next season,” reported Zac Bailey from 9News Sydney.
“The Roosters have essentially communicated to him that if he can secure a long-term contract with good compensation, they won’t obstruct his path.”
“With Reece Robson now on board, they feel they’ve maximised what they could gain from Connor Watson.”

Watson has already garnered interest from the Manly Sea Eagles, who might be eager to act quickly to enhance their squad with an infusion of much-needed talent.
Another team likely to be in the running for Watson’s services beyond 2026 is the expansion club, the Perth Bears, who are yet to attract a current State of Origin star.
Mal Meninga is keen on securing a marquee player, and acquiring someone of Watson’s quality would significantly bolster the Bears’ roster as they prepare for their inaugural season, with Watson capable of effortlessly slotting into either the hooker or lock-forward position.

St George Illawarra have gotten off to a dismal start this season and may need to act in the player market, but they are well-equipped at both hooker and lock for the foreseeable future.
The Bulldogs could also be dark horses in the chase for Watson, having shown interest in him a few years back before he ultimately extended his stay with the Roosters after recovering from an ACL injury.
Watson fits the profile of Cameron Ciraldo’s system, renowned for incorporating smaller, faster, and skillful players in and around the ruck area.
Phil Gould has made significant adjustments to Canterbury’s squad over recent times and remains heavily involved in discussions surrounding top-tier talent.

Cronulla is also preparing to make significant roster decisions in the coming months, as numerous players face uncertain futures, and it’s clear that coach Craig Fitzgibbon could benefit from having Watson’s talents available.
If Watson is unable to secure a suitable long-term opportunity for the next season, he remains contractually tied to the Roosters and may consider the PNG Chiefs for the 2028 season.
As of now, neither the Roosters nor Watson have publicly addressed his current situation.
