Canberra Raiders head coach Ricky Stuart has reversed his position on the six-again rule, stating that its current interpretation is damaging “the essence of the game.”
During his weekly media briefing on Thursday, Stuart confessed that he had once supported the rule but has now reconsidered his stance.
The six-again rule has sparked significant debate in the NRL, with plenty of confusion surrounding the rationale behind its application.
Both Paul Gallen and Phil Gould have voiced their discontent, with Gould remarking on Nine’s 100% Footy, “Just look at all the six-agains being called, it’s like they’re waving their arms around uncontrollably.”

Stuart has added his voice to the growing frustration.
“I used to support the six-again rule, but I feel we’ve lost what makes the game great. The way six-agains are interpreted seems arbitrary at best,” the coach expressed.
“Decisions aren’t held accountable at the moment; in my view, a six-again should warrant a penalty.”
“It should be something deserving enforcement, but at present, I don’t believe that’s the case, which explains the criticism we’re seeing.”
“Simply speeding up the game doesn’t make it more appealing; a scoreline of 50-30 isn’t necessarily attractive.”

Stuart’s current view marks a departure from his statements in March, when he challenged fans to either watch players wrestle or accept the current state of play.
“I aim to eradicate wrestling; I want more speed in the game, and if the six-again rule serves that purpose, then so be it,” he said.
“We need to remove the wrestling and the unsightly play on the ground. I consider that a blemish on our sport.”
“The fans want to see skill and defensive strategies that reflect the pace of the game.”
“I may not appreciate the six-agains against my team, but we’re striving for a cleaner game and ensuring better execution to avoid conceding them.”
“As a coach, as long as the referees remain consistent with their six-again calls and monitor star players accordingly, I’m satisfied.”
