Jimmy Bartel has reinforced the importance of the media’s scrutiny regarding Carlton’s management of the Elijah Hollands situation, asserting that such inquiries are crucial for ensuring accountability.
In the wake of Michael Voss’ passionate press conference, where the Carlton coach defended the privacy of the Hollands family while pushing back against media pressure, Bartel highlighted the contrasting responsibilities of sporting clubs and the press.
Although he commended Voss for his leadership, Bartel dismissed the idea that seeking information amounted to “bullying” or a disregard for the welfare of the young AFL player.

Appearing on Nine’s Wide World of Sports on Sunday, the Geelong legend suggested that both Voss’s effective management of a challenging scenario and the need for robust media scrutiny can coexist.
“There are multiple arguments being made right now, and they seem to be conflated,” Bartel noted.
“Michael Voss was excellent during his press conference; he defended his club admirably and addressed his team’s needs effectively.”
Bartel emphasised that prioritising the welfare of the player while also expecting accountability from the organisation are not mutually exclusive concerns.
“People are rightfully respecting Elijah Hollands, giving him space, and allowing his family and the club to support him,” Bartel explained.
“However, that doesn’t lessen the necessity for clear answers about how we arrived at this situation.

“That’s about accountability and the quest for transparency.
“We shouldn’t conflate these matters. Michael Voss performed admirably for his club, but this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be asking questions to prevent such situations from arising again.”
Carlton is set to face St Kilda next Saturday.
