Billy Slater has dismissed calls for the Cowboys to shift Jaxon Purdue to fullback during the current season instead of waiting until the end of the year, following Scott Drinkwater’s move to the Dragons.
This week, St George Illawarra secured Drinkwater on a three-year contract through 2027, reportedly valued at $1 million per year.
There’s a proposition that coach Todd Payten should accelerate Purdue’s development by repositioning Drinkwater and allowing the promising 20-year-old to take on the No.1 jersey sooner rather than later.
When this idea was presented to Slater on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, the legendary fullback for Storm, Maroons, and Kangaroos was quick to reject it.
“Absolutely not, absolutely not,” Slater responded firmly.
“Focus on this year first. Next year will take care of itself.”

Purdue has been filling the centre position for North Queensland.
Currently, Jake Clifford plays five-eighth, Tom Dearden is at halfback, and Drinkwater holds the fullback role.
“Jaxon Purdue will develop as a player regardless of the position he occupies,” Slater noted.
“I expect we’ll see him utilised more in a closer role, whether that’s at five-eighth or fullback. I believe they have intentions for him to play as fullback in the long run with Scott Drinkwater’s departure.”
“But certainly, put all your focus on this year.”
Slater added concerning the team’s strategy: “Unless moving someone is in the best interests of the team this year, then go for it.”
Brad Fittler chimed in, arguing,
“It’s never going to be in the team’s best interest to lose Scott Drinkwater, especially at fullback,” remarked the former Roosters and Panthers star.
Andrew Johns commented on the fast-paced style of play, suggesting that it greatly benefits Drinkwater.
“He’s playing like their halfback based on how he performs,” Johns said.
“He positions himself at first receiver, and he’s their creative driving force.
“He’ll be an excellent addition for St George Illawarra.”
In a thrilling match filled with points, the Cowboys triumphed over the Sharks with a score of 46-34 in Townsville on Friday evening.
The North Queensland side currently sits seventh on the ladder, boasting five wins and three losses.
