Juventus clinched a spot in the top four of Serie A with a narrow 1-0 victory over Atalanta B.C at the New Balance Arena, a result that lengthens The Old Lady’s unbeaten streak in the league to six matches.
The home side narrowly missed taking the lead on two occasions within the first 10 minutes. Polish international Nicola Zalewski saw his shot drift just wide when he should have found the back of the net, and shortly thereafter, Giorgio Scalvini’s thunderous header from close range struck the woodwork.
Following this spirited start, the game settled into a quieter rhythm before the action intensified again just before half-time.
Atalanta’s Nikola Krstovic had the clearest chance to break the deadlock in the closing stages of the first half with an impressive acrobatic attempt from close range.
However, La Dea fans, who were in great voice throughout the night, recognised that their side needed more precision in the attacking third, having only managed one shot on target out of 10 attempts by the break. Conversely, Juventus looked unusually subdued in attack and offered little threat to Atalanta’s backline.
Raffaele Palladino’s squad paid dearly for their earlier misses almost immediately after the resumption. Just three minutes into the second half, the Bianconeri took the lead as Jeremie Boga’s misdirected shot inexplicably looped into the net after Atalanta failed to clear a ball into the area.
La Dea pushed hard to find an equaliser and nearly succeeded just before the hour mark, but Michele Di Gregorio produced a fantastic save to keep out Berat Djimsiti.
In the end, it was a deeply frustrating evening for Atalanta, as their inability to finish opportunities condemned them to defeat.
Despite not being at their best, Juventus secured three crucial points. They will aim to extend their fine form next weekend when they face Bologna, with aspirations for a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League still very much alive.
Atalanta, meanwhile, sits seventh in the league and will look to get back to winning ways as they head to Roma on Matchday 33.
