Regardless of the outcome in Sunday’s Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs have already matched their highest total of victories in a Betway Premiership season since the 2019/20 season.
This season has marked a period of advancement for Chiefs under co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze. As the campaign draws to a close, the club’s management will face a challenging decision: whether to continue with the current coaching duo or to initiate a fresh start.
Having secured 13 wins thus far, Chiefs have already exceeded their total from the 2024/25 season, where they managed just eight victories, albeit in a season reduced to only 28 matches.
With six matches remaining, it’s reasonable to expect them to surpass the win total from the 2019/20 season.
In that particular season, the AmaKhosi achieved 17 wins under coach Ernst Middendorp, only to lose out on the title on the final day after being held to a 1-1 draw by Baroka FC.
Additionally, this season represents the highest win count they’ve achieved since clinching the league title in the 2014/15 season, during which coach Stuart Baxter led them to a comfortable 12-point margin, finishing with 21 wins from 30 matches.
The key difference this season has been their ability to convert draws into victories—something that has plagued them in previous years—though fans may still recall occasions where this did not occur.
This campaign has been underpinned by a formidable defence, conceding just 14 goals across 24 games, which stands as the third-best record in the league. It’s worth noting that three of those conceded goals occurred during their last encounter with Pirates in late February.
Nonetheless, scoring has been a concern, with only 28 goals registered so far, averaging just above one per game. While this may seem quite bleak, it still places them fifth in the league for scoring, despite them having played at least one game fewer than most other teams.
