Hazlewood leads RCB to emphatic victory over Delhi Capitals
In a commanding display, Josh Hazlewood and his Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) teammates dismantled the Delhi Capitals last night, propelling them to a clear second place in the IPL standings and bolstering their bid for consecutive titles.
Just 48 hours prior, Delhi had set a remarkable record, amassing a staggering 2/264 against Pat Cummins’ Sunrisers Hyderabad, yet they fell dramatically to a mere 75 runs in this encounter.
Hazlewood struck three times within his initial two overs, showcasing his Test-match calibre bowling with two precisely delivered back-of-a-length balls and a full, wide delivery that caught a flat-footed Sameer Rizvi, who edged it behind to the keeper.
The Australian seamer has now joined the ranks of Harshal Patel and Anil Kumble as only the third player to claim four wickets or more in three separate matches for RCB, firmly etching his name into the franchise’s history as one of the all-time great fast bowlers in the IPL.
Bell and Bancroft steer Gloucestershire to victory
The former Australian opener Cameron Bancroft, now captaining Gloucestershire, remained unbeaten as his side achieved a ten-wicket triumph over Derbyshire on their home ground.
This marks their first win of the season after four attempts, lifting them off the bottom of the Division Two table. Bancroft recorded his second and third highest scores of the season (40 and 19*) in what has thus far been a challenging year for the 33-year-old, especially during this typically high-scoring April period in English county cricket.
The pivotal victory was bolstered by Tasmanian fast bowler Gabe Bell, who has only been signed for the first six matches of the season. Bell took three wickets in each innings, delivering an impressive total of 44 overs and finishing with match figures of 6-128.
The game concluded under somewhat comical circumstances as Derbyshire opted to utilise only spin bowlers during their brief innings to avoid incurring a one-point penalty for slow over rates. Bancroft and his opening partner Ben Charlesworth capitalised on this strategy, smashing a six apiece and swiftly chasing down 39 runs in just five overs, all while impending rain threatened to disrupt play on day four.
Criticism of lack of VAR in women’s football from Kerr’s coach
Matildas captain Sam Kerr found herself controversially denied a hat-trick and a chance to become Chelsea’s all-time leading Women’s Super League goal scorer after match officials missed a clear second-half goal in their 4-1 victory over Everton on Sunday night.
Kerr netted a header to the left of Everton keeper Courtney Brosnan in the 57th minute, with replays showing the ball hitting the left post and crossing the line before being cleared by Brosnan.
This left Kerr tied on 63 league goals with Fran Kirby, whose overall Chelsea tally of 116 goals puts her three ahead of Kerr’s current total of 114.
Head coach Sonia Bompastor expressed her disappointment over the absence of goal-line technology and VAR in what is considered the world’s leading women’s football league.
“This situation highlights again the need for technology in this league next season,” Bompastor stated. “Our league is the most competitive globally, and we must ensure we operate at a high standard regarding such crucial decisions.
“While we won by three goals, which lessened the impact of this incident, had the end-of-season goal difference been at stake, I would have been extremely frustrated over this missed goal.”
“Ultimately, we need this technology to ensure fairness for all players.”
“Kerr matched Kirby’s league goal tally, but realistically, she should have taken the lead because that was undeniably a valid goal.”
Neil Robertson secures place in World Championship quarter-finals
Neil Robertson, the 2010 World Snooker Champion, has reached the quarter-finals of the World Championship for the first time since the 2020/21 season, following early exits in his last three appearances.
The world number three overcame England’s 13th-ranked Chris Wakelin with a score of 13-7 in a best-of-25 frames match, and he is now targeting his second title of the season after his narrow victory over Ronnie O’Sullivan in the Saudi Arabia Masters final back in August.
Controversy arose as Robertson called for a ban on O’Sullivan’s ‘Triangle chalk’ due to its effect on cue balls and table conditions, potentially igniting a dispute with the snooker great.
“I would prefer to compete against John so I can avoid dealing with the chalk Ronnie uses, which should be prohibited from the game,” Robertson told the BBC.
“I’m puzzled as to how it’s even permitted.”
“Every player despises it; it wreaks havoc on the table, resulting in kicks and unpredictable bounces.”
“He doesn’t use it to distract anyone; he isn’t like that at all.”
“He’s practically the only player on tour still using that chalk—let’s hope they impose a ban.”
The 44-year-old is set to face snooker legend John Higgins in the quarter-finals tonight after Higgins staged an extraordinary comeback from 9-4 down to defeat O’Sullivan 13-12 in the tiebreaker. Robertson’s route to potential glory became notably easier following the shock exit of current world number one Judd Trump, who was ousted by Iran’s Hossein Vafaei in another deciding frame.
