Bo Henriksen emphasised that his players should be regarded as humans rather than machines when asked to clarify why Mainz seemed well below their usual standards during the first half of their away match against Borussia Dortmund, which ended in a 3-1 defeat for the visitors.
High-flying Mainz entered the encounter with significant momentum, facing a Dortmund side that had dropped four of their last six matches and only managed to secure 35 points from 26 games – their worst tally since 2007.
As the first half neared its conclusion, Dortmund managed to score twice, much to Henriksen’s frustration, as he acknowledged that the performance from his side left much to be desired.
“I can’t explain why we played as we did in the first half. We lost 60% of the aerial duels and didn’t exhibit enough intensity in our ground challenges. I can’t put my finger on it, but that’s just how it goes,” Henriksen remarked.
“You’re not always the best reporter either,” Henriksen retorted to the journalist who raised the question. “We are human beings, not robots. We weren’t performing at our best, and like in life, if you don’t give it your all, you’ll run into difficulties, which is exactly what transpired today,” he stated during the post-match press conference.
Following their setback, Mainz slipped from third to fourth place as Eintracht Frankfurt moved ahead of them. They currently hold 43 points in the Bundesliga. Mainz will look to redeem themselves after this disappointing performance against Dortmund when they host Holstein Kiel at the MAWA-Arena this Saturday.
