The match between Lionel Messi’s (37) Inter Miami and Sporting Kansas City in the Champions Cup has been postponed due to severe weather, including heavy snow, as announced by CONCACAF on Monday.
Initially set for Tuesday, this match would have marked the first game for Javier Mascherano’s team in the continental tournament, but it will now take place on Wednesday instead.
The United States National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the area, covering parts of east-central and northeastern Kansas along with central and west-central Missouri.
“The decision to delay the match at Children’s Mercy Park prioritised the safety of both players and fans, made after discussions with the involved clubs and local authorities,” CONCACAF stated in their announcement.
They further mentioned that the risk of snow accumulation on the pitch also influenced the decision to postpone.
The second leg is slated for February 25th at Miami’s Chase Stadium, with the victorious side progressing to take on Jamaica’s Cavalier in the round of 16.
The Champions Cup, which was formerly the Champions League, is an annual international club tournament run by CONCACAF, serving as its flagship continental competition for clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.
