The England Roses have kept their chances alive in the Test series against Australia, clinching a thrilling two-goal victory over the Diamonds in Sydney on Sunday.
While Australia managed to fend off a spirited performance from England to claim the first win in this three-match series, they were left shocked when their rivals staged a comeback in the closing moments, finalising a 61-59 win.
This marks only the third occasion the Roses have triumphed over the Diamonds on Australian turf, and it’s their first victory since the 2023 World Cup.
The match saw both teams evenly matched in the first half before the hosts edged ahead with a two-point lead in the third quarter.
However, a series of defensive turnovers from player of the match Funmi Fadoju, who notched up eight gains, two intercepts, and 12 deflections, shifted the momentum in favour of England’s attacking combinations.

Australia’s captain, Liz Watson, stated to Fox Netball, “As a Diamonds unit, we aim to play at pace. The physicality from the Roses tends to disrupt our rhythm.”
She added, “That ramped up and slowed down our flow… it’s disappointing.”
Sophie Garbin, the goal shooter, achieved an impressive 46 out of 48 goal attempts, while Kiera Austin contributed an additional 19 goals.
Austin remarked that the intensity of this match felt like an entirely different England team had appeared compared to the first Test.
“They increased their physicality… and we perhaps didn’t adjust quickly enough or employ strong enough movement to break open their defence,” she noted.
“It’s an important lesson for us — we can’t simply rely on the momentums shifting in our favour and expect to get good defensive runs. We have to seize opportunities to score, and we weren’t as efficient with that today.”

In spite of the match tilting in favour of their British rivals, Watson asserted that only minor adjustments will be made moving forward.
“Following our performance in game one, we anticipated England would modify a few tactics and come out strong, which they indeed did,” Watson explained.
“We missed opportunities to capitalise when we had the ball and were slow to adapt to their structures.”
“We won’t overhaul everything; what we’ve employed thus far has been quite effective. It’s about the finer details and maintaining our confidence.”
The Diamonds will contest the Test series title against the Roses on Wednesday evening in Bendigo.
