Wayne Bennett’s return as head coach of the Rabbitohs is already feeling like a daunting challenge, even before the season has properly kicked off.
A significant setback for the club’s finals ambitions occurred on Wednesday morning when inspirational captain Cameron Murray exited the training field with a suspected ruptured Achilles.
If confirmed, this injury could sideline Murray for the entire season, creating a substantial void not just in terms of leadership but also due to his importance as a key player.
South Sydney’s performance improves dramatically with him on the pitch; his absence for a large part of the previous season was a key factor in the team finishing at the bottom of the table in 16th position.
Having managed only 14 games last season, Murray appeared ready for the opening round until this upcoming disaster struck this week.

What are the Rabbitohs’ next steps?
The immediate concern will be identifying who will captain the team as they prepare for their round one fixture against the Dolphins, particularly with seasoned players Damien Cook and Tom Burgess both departing in 2025.
Latrell Mitchell emerged as a potential leader, but the star fullback sustained his own training injury, which could keep him out of the opening rounds.
This scenario could see Cody Walker assume a central leadership role, although it may not be the most intuitive fit for the five-eighth.
The primary challenge for Bennett now lies in finding a suitable replacement for Murray in the forwards, an area already in need of bolstering for the Rabbitohs.
While there are several contenders for the role, substituting a player like Murray, who logs significant minutes and occupies multiple positions within the pack, is no easy task.
The safest bet to wear the No.13 jersey appears to be Jai Arrow, who boasts vast experience at the highest level and is comfortable in the middle, despite having played on the edge during his time at Souths.

Keaon Koloamatangi also divided his time between the middle and the edge last season while filling in for Murray’s absence and has demonstrated a strong work ethic on the field.
However, a potentially suitable replacement at lock could be young talent Tallis Duncan, who recently signed a new two-year deal just days before Murray’s injury.
The 22-year-old has steadily progressed as a promising player and closely mirrors Murray’s style, physique, and skill set.
“He brings versatility to our forward pack and, most importantly, he embodies the right mentality and determination to excel every time he dons the Rabbitohs jersey and aspires to be a South Sydney player,” commented head of football Mark Ellison.
In his first season, Duncan featured in seven matches and increased his appearances to 20 in his second year, impressing many despite the team’s struggles.

He averaged 93 running metres and 24 tackles per game, primarily coming off the bench and injecting much-needed energy into the game.
Even if Duncan slots into the starting lock position, it’s important to acknowledge that replacing Murray will require more than just one player, necessitating robust rotation throughout the squad.
Josh Schuster remains somewhat of an X-factor for the Rabbitohs; should the Samoan international find his fitness and form, he could potentially earn a bench role and share playing time with Duncan.
Unfortunately, Schuster didn’t feature in the first trial and was absent from the Charity Shield squad, raising concerns over a possible injury that could jeopardise his involvement.

Siliva Havili has experience playing both hooker and lock during his time at Redfern, while Lachlan Hubner and Jamie Humphreys may also vie for a position in Bennett’s 17-man squad.
Murray’s absence poses a significant challenge for Bennett as he strives to lead the Rabbitohs back into the top eight for the first time since 2022.
However, if anyone can navigate these issues, it’s the seven-time premiership-winning coach himself.
