Braga and Real Betis played out an exciting 1-1 stalemate at the Estádio Municipal de Braga, leaving their UEFA Europa League (UEL) quarter-final tie on a knife-edge ahead of next week’s return leg.
The home side began the match with intensity, putting the Betis defence under significant pressure from the outset. Just three minutes in, Pau Lopez produced a fine save to deny Braga captain Ricardo Horta from claiming an early advantage for his team.
However, Lopez was powerless to stop Braga’s next chance that followed soon after, as a corner taken by Diego Rodrigues found Florian Grillitsch at the near post, and the Austrian international executed a brilliant finish for his third goal of the campaign.
For a brief moment, Betis thought they had equalised almost instantly when Marc Bartra scored from close range, but his goal was swiftly disallowed for offside.
Bartra faced further frustration shortly after the midway point of the first half when his powerful header struck the post, leading to an impressive block from Lukas Hornicek to prevent Abde Ezzalzouli from leveling the scores.
The visitors continued to gather momentum as the first half advanced, and only a remarkable save from Hornicek kept Cucho Hernandez from equalising in the 37th minute.
Eventually, Manuel Pellegrini’s side managed to draw level a quarter of an hour into the second half. After Jean-Baptiste Gorby fouled Ezzalzouli in the penalty area, referee Felix Zwayer had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, and Hernandez confidently converted the ensuing penalty.
The latter stages of the match were filled with tension, as both teams recognised that a second goal for either side could prove decisive.
In the end, despite valiant efforts from both squads, a winning goal could not be found, setting the stage for an intriguing clash when the teams reconvene in Seville next week. The victors of this tie will face either Freiburg or Celta Vigo in the semi-finals.
