Teen sensation Kgomotso Modiba appears to be adapting well to his new life at Brazilian club Fluminense, where he has delivered impressive performances for the Under-20 squad.
The 18-year-old talent hails from the Stars of Africa Academy in Johannesburg and is already representing South Africa at Under-20 international level. He played a pivotal role in his country’s success at the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt last year.
Farouk Khan, the owner of the Stars of Africa Academy, has a longstanding relationship with Brazil, and facilitating Modiba’s move to South America aims to help him adjust to life away from home, given his substantial potential for a successful career overseas.
Khan recently shared a highlight reel showcasing Modiba, featuring moments where he earned and converted two penalties during a match. The talented midfielder officially joined Fluminense in January, shortly after celebrating his 18th birthday, following an assessment visit to Brazil the previous year.
His style of play draws comparisons to that of Emile Witbooi, the playmaker for Cape Town City, who is also regarded as a future Bafana Bafana representative.
At present, Modiba stands out as the sole South African player in a Brazilian Serie A club, although there have been others before him.
Mark Williams had a stint with Corinthians back in 1996, while Tyroane Sandows was part of Grêmio’s first team during the 2016/17 season.
Modiba is not the first player Khan has placed at Fluminense; Luther Singh trained with the team and also with Vasco da Gama at the age of 16 before embarking on a professional journey in Sweden, where his career took off.
