Leicester City, currently competing in the Championship, has had their appeal against a six-point penalty rejected, as confirmed by both the club and the Premier League on Wednesday. This setback complicates their efforts to avoid relegation.
The Midlands outfit finds itself at the bottom of the Championship standings, sitting 22nd and just a point away from escaping the relegation zone. Without a change in form during their remaining five fixtures, they risk dropping to League One, the third tier of English football.
A decade ago, Leicester surprised the footballing world by clinching the Premier League title against all odds, but they were relegated last season. Earlier this year, the club faced a six-point deduction due to violations of the stringent profitability and sustainability regulations set by the English Football League.
“The decision by an independent Commission to impose a six-point deduction on Leicester City Football Club this season has been upheld by an independent Appeal Board,” stated the Premier League, who initiated the original probe.
Leicester has acknowledged the ruling.
“With the matter now resolved and only five games left this season, everyone at the Club is determined to concentrate on the upcoming matches and aim to influence our season’s outcome through our performance on the pitch,” the club remarked.
The Foxes are set to welcome Swansea City this Saturday.
