A-League Goal Reaction Ignites Discussion: ‘MUCH MORE Than 30 Years Ago’ | The A-Leagues Download Ep.23
As we approach the final five rounds of the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season, the stakes couldn’t be higher. With the Premiership, top-six berths, the Golden Boot, AFL Champions League qualification, and automatic spots for the Australia Cup all hanging in the balance, there’s plenty still to fight for.
The excitement is palpable as unanswered questions loom large in this thrilling conclusion to the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
With the Finals Series fast approaching, here’s a look at the current landscape of the competition.
WEEKEND PREVIEW: Key Insights for Round 25 of the Isuzu UTE A-League
The Premiership
Auckland FC sits comfortably at the top of the table with a seven-point lead, making them the hot favourites to claim the Premiers Plate. However, in football, surprises are always on the cards, and coach Steve Corica will ensure his players remain focused as the Black Knights seek their first trophy in their inaugural A-League campaign.
Western United returns from a bye for Round 25, currently positioned closest to Auckland in seventh place with 28 points, trailing them by seven points.
If Western manages to narrow the gap to just one win by the end of the regular season, it could set the stage for a dramatic showdown in Round 29, where they will host Auckland in a potential Premiership decider, provided Auckland’s form falters in their preceding four matches.
Melbourne City is just one point behind Western, sitting in third with 37 points, while Melbourne Victory (36 points) and Western Sydney Wanderers (35 points) are in close pursuit.
TOP-SIX RACE: Surprises Anticipated as A-Leagues Experts Predict Top Six Outcomes: Here’s Their Finals Forecast

Melbourne Victory has played one more match than the rest of the top six and will take a bye in Round 25, diminishing their chances for a late push for the Premiership. Auckland faces an in-form Wanderers side in a crucial encounter this weekend that could see Western Sydney narrow the gap to seven points with four games remaining. If Alen Stajcic’s team secures a victory against Auckland, Western United could subsequently reduce the top spot lead to just four points with a win over bottom-placed Perth Glory.
Keep an eye on this: the race for the Premiership is far from over, and while Auckland has established a substantial lead, they aren’t guaranteed top position with five rounds still to play.

AFC Champions League Spot
This season presents an opportunity to secure a place in the lucrative AFC Champions League Elite for 2025-26, with the highest-finishing Australian team at the season’s end earning the coveted spot.
Currently, Auckland FC leads the table, holding the position that would typically guarantee an ACL Elite berth. However, as part of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), they are ineligible to compete in AFC club tournaments.
Western United, positioned second heading into Round 25, would claim Australia’s sole ACL Elite spot should the season end now. Nevertheless, Melbourne City, Melbourne Victory, and Western Sydney Wanderers are all keen to ensure they finish as the top Australian club, all sitting within two points of Western on the table.
Despite their recent struggles, Adelaide United should not be counted out with five matches remaining. The Reds have been without a win in their last six matches, accumulating four losses and two draws; however, four of their last five fixtures are against teams outside the top six.
Adelaide trails Western by five points and is certainly within reach of a late surge up the standings.
In the 2024-25 season, simply qualifying for the AFC Champions League Elite brings in USD $800k (AUD $1.27m) for the teams.

Top-Six Race
Heading into Round 25, only Auckland is guaranteed a spot in the Finals this season. Wellington Phoenix, Brisbane Roar, and Perth Glory are all confirmed to miss out on the top six. However, the other five Finals spots are still wide open, with as many as nine teams competing for positions in the standings.
Central Coast Mariners currently sit 10th with 25 points and have managed to reduce the gap to sixth-placed Adelaide over the past two rounds. The Reds have suffered back-to-back defeats, while the Mariners have secured four points from their last two outings, heading into Round 25.
The reigning champions trail Newcastle Jets in 10th place by one point (seven points behind Adelaide). Macarthur Bulls are still four points away from the top six, albeit having played one match more than Adelaide.
Seventh-placed Sydney FC poses the most significant threat to Adelaide. The two teams face each other in Round 25, separated by just three points; Sydney’s goal difference of +10 far outweighs Adelaide’s (+1) and should they end up with matching points, goal difference is the first tiebreaker.

This Saturday night, all eyes are on Coopers Stadium as Adelaide hosts Sydney under the floodlights. In their last encounter at the same venue, Adelaide was 3-1 up going into extra time, only for a stunning performance by Douglas Costa to allow Sydney to claw back a point in one of the season’s most thrilling matches.
Should Adelaide emerge victorious, they will fortify their position in the top six. Conversely, a win for Sydney could displace Adelaide from the standings, placing their future in someone else’s hands.

The Battle for Automatic Australia Cup Spots
Auckland FC’s debut season in the Isuzu UTE A-League this year has expanded the competition to 13 clubs for the first time in its 20-year history, prompting a shake-up in the qualification criteria for the 2025 Hahn Australia Cup.
In the previous 12-team format, the top eight teams qualified automatically for the Round of 32 in the Australia Cup, while the bottom four engaged in play-offs for the remaining two spots.
The revised structure accommodates an additional club for 2025, leading to an allocation of 11 spots for the Australia Cup.
This means now that the nine highest finishers in the Isuzu UTE A-League table will automatically qualify for the Australia Cup, with play-offs between the 10th and 13th placed teams, and the 11th and 12th placed teams.
The remaining 21 slots in the Round of 32 will be distributed to member federations across Australia as follows:
- Football Victoria: Four slots
- Football New South Wales: Four slots
- Football Queensland: Four slots
- Football South Australia: Two slots
- Football Northern New South Wales: Two slots
- Football West: Two slots
- Football Tasmania: One slot
- Football Northern Territory: One slot
- Capital Football: One slot
GOLDEN BOOT: A Historic Season for Young Aussies Threatens 14-Year A-Leagues Record & Unmatched 2014 Feat

Golden Boot
This season presents an exciting opportunity for one of four emerging Australian talents to etch their name in history as the Golden Boot race heads toward a thrilling finish.
The current Golden Boot leaderboard is dominated by four young Aussies vying for the top goal-scorer honour in 2024-25:
1st: Noah Botic, Western United: 11 goals, 23 years old
=2nd: Archie Goodwin, Adelaide United: 10 goals, 20 years old
=2nd: Nicolas Milanovic, Western Sydney Wanderers: 10 goals, 23 years old
=4th: Adrian Segecic, Sydney FC: 9 goals, 20 years old
=4th: Hiroshi Ibusuki, Western United: 9 goals, 34 years old
=4th: Joe Lolley, Sydney FC: 9 goals, 32 years old
Noah Botic leads a competitive field of Golden Boot aspirants. Besides the six players within two goals of the leader, three others are on eight goals, while ten more have netted seven.
If anyone among Botic, Archie Goodwin, Nicolas Milanovic, or Adrian Segecic clinches the Golden Boot, they would become the first Under-23 player since Adam Taggart in the 2013-14 season to achieve outright Golden Boot success in Isuzu UTE A-League history.
In the history of the Golden Boot, it has only ever been shared twice in 19 seasons before 2024-25: once in the inaugural season (2008-09 – Alex Brosque, Bobby Despotovski, Dean Heffernan, and Stewart Petrie) and again in 2016-17 (Besart Berisha and Jamie Maclaren).
