Manchester City’s captain, Bernardo Silva, will depart from the club at the conclusion of the season, as confirmed by assistant manager Pep Lijnders on Sunday.
The 31-year-old international from Portugal has enjoyed a remarkable nine-year tenure at the Etihad Stadium, during which he has clinched six Premier League titles along with the Champions League. He will leave as a free agent when his contract comes to an end after the season wraps up.
“Every great story must conclude,” Lijnders remarked to the press following City’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals. “I hope he savours these last few months – just six weeks remain – and receives a fitting send-off. He truly deserves all the accolades.”
Pep Guardiola, who was serving a touchline ban during the match, has previously labelled Silva as “irreplaceable.”
Silva made the switch to City from AS Monaco in 2017 for a fee reportedly around £43.5 million, and he has since featured in 450 matches for the club. Renowned for his tactical adaptability, exceptional technique, and relentless work ethic, the midfielder has been a key figure in Guardiola’s squad.
Having secured the League Cup last month, City is still in the hunt for a domestic treble as the 2025/26 season enters its closing stages, despite trailing nine points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal. The club has a game in hand and eight fixtures left to close the gap.
