Danish coach Nils Nilsen has been dismissed for being deemed ‘a touch too lenient, a tad too gentle’, despite steering the Japanese women to the Asian Cup crown just two weeks prior, as stated by Women’s national team director Norio Sasaki in the South China Morning Post.
Last month, Japan capped off an impressive Asian Cup journey by overcoming hosts Australia 1-0 in the final, securing the continental title for the third time in four tournaments.
The squad also earned qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil after reaching the semi-finals of the Asian Cup.
However, this achievement apparently fell short of the Japanese Football Association’s expectations, leading them to end Nielsen’s tenure as the first foreign coach of Japan’s women’s team.
The Japan Football Association announced on Thursday that his contract had expired, and they chose not to renew it.
According to Norio Sasaki, the director of the women’s national team, Japan’s chances of succeeding at next year’s World Cup would not improve under Nielsen’s leadership, highlighting his coaching as “a bit too lenient, a bit too soft.”
“A stricter methodology and more intense training are required. In discussions about strategies to elevate the team, it felt as though he lacked the necessary enthusiasm,” Sasaki commented.
Nilsen’s record during his time with Japan includes 12 victories, four draws, and four losses since taking the helm in December 2024.
