With North Melbourne’s seven-year proposal on the table, Luke Davies-Uniacke is faced with a crucial decision – is he fully committed? Or is he concerned about the Roos’ slow progress?
NORTH Melbourne has laid its cards on the table, presenting a compelling offer. The decision now rests with LDU.
As competition intensifies around Luke Davies-Uniacke, one of the most sought-after free agents this year, the Kangaroos have made their intentions clear to their star midfielder.
As reported by AFL.com.au last week, North has proposed a seven-year contract to its reigning best and fairest player, potentially securing his services until the conclusion of the 2032 season.
Should he accept, this deal would represent the largest ever in North’s history, estimated to be valued between $8-9 million. The Roos have unmistakably illustrated their desire to keep Davies-Uniacke.
The 25-year-old now faces the most significant decision of his professional career, with the ball firmly in his court.
Thus far, the dynamic midfielder has opted to take his time before finalising his future. The Roos were eager to commence discussions on an early extension last year, but after finishing in the bottom two for the fifth consecutive season, Davies-Uniacke chose to hold off.
This is not particularly uncommon. While certain players sign early as pre-agents – such as Darcy Fogarty, Jacob Weitering, Noah Balta and Cam Rayner, who all secured deals late in 2024 – many enter their free agency season looking to prove their worth.
If he is comfortable and content at the Roos, Davies-Uniacke could eliminate any potential distractions by finalising a contract before the season kicks off. North’s significant offer clearly indicates his value within the club.
Though he has expressed his happiness at Arden Street, rival clubs including St Kilda will persistently pursue him until a resolution is reached. Competing offers may be around $1.5 million to entice a free agent without the need for a trade.
Exactly one year ago in February, the focus was on Cam Zurhaar’s contract as he entered his free agency phase. Zurhaar publicly urged the Roos to show improvement prior to signing, eventually securing a five-year deal ahead of round 21 that had been available since March.
North would be anxious if Davies-Uniacke chooses to delay his decision until a similar timeframe, and given his more reserved media presence, he is unlikely to publicly state he is waiting for improvement before committing if it reaches that stage.
Even if Davies-Uniacke carries his contract deliberation into the start of the season, North is confident of upward momentum in 2025.
This was evident from their off-season strategy last year, which included the acquisition of three premiership veterans – Jack Darling, Luke Parker, and Caleb Daniel – along with trading away a future first-round pick to accumulate an additional first-round pick, bringing their total to 12 over the past five years (with 11 still at the club).
They are prepared to move past the dark times. By extending this significant deal to Davies-Uniacke, North aims to have him as part of the core as they strive for a resurgence.
