Manuel Neuer, the experienced goalkeeper for Bayern Munich, showcased an outstanding display during Tuesday’s 2-1 win against Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, reigniting the debate over his possible comeback to the national team as the World Cup approaches in June.
The 40-year-old World Cup champion, who stepped back from international play in 2024, has been a topic of conversation among German supporters, especially with Oliver Baumann currently serving as the national team’s preferred goalkeeper, and Jonas Urbig and Alexander Nubel poised to be his alternatives for the upcoming tournament. Marc-Andre ter Stegen is unable to participate due to ongoing injuries.
In Tuesday’s match, Neuer, who was the first-choice keeper for Germany for 14 years, delivered a sequence of remarkable saves throughout the thrilling contest. He repeatedly thwarted efforts from Real Madrid’s star striker Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr, helping to maintain Bayern’s narrow advantage and ultimately earning the man-of-the-match award.
German analysts have praised Neuer, with many advocating for his inclusion in the World Cup squad. Even Real Madrid’s coach, Alvaro Arbeloa, commended Neuer’s exceptional performance.
“I believe Neuer was the MVP,” Arbeloa remarked. “We had numerous opportunities to score more goals, but we failed to convert.”

Germany has often been blessed with world-class goalkeepers for international competition, yet there has been a noticeable lack of consistency in the position since Neuer’s retirement.
With the upcoming World Cup taking place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Germany is keen to improve after their early exits in 2018 and 2022, resulting in a surge of calls for Neuer to make a return.
There has been much speculation regarding the dynamic between the seasoned goalkeeper and German coach Julian Nagelsmann, which has sometimes appeared to be tense.
When approached for comments about congratulating Neuer on his recent 40th birthday, the coach indicated he was unaware of the milestone and has consistently dismissed the likelihood of persuading him to come out of retirement from international football.
However, following Neuer’s brilliant performance on Tuesday, he was once again quizzed about the possibility of rejoining the national setup.
“That’s not a topic we need to revisit,” Neuer responded to the media.
“Where did we play today? It was an incredible match. Discussion of the national team is irrelevant now. I’ve made my stance clear and my focus is solely on Bayern.”
Despite Neuer’s desire to prioritise club commitments with Bayern, who are vying for three titles, performances like this will only intensify the pressure on Nagelsmann.
“Honestly, his performance didn’t surprise me,” stated Bayern’s sports director, Max Eberl. “Manuel has maintained this level throughout the season. He saved us on numerous occasions today.”
When probed about a possible return to the national team, Eberl commented: “I can’t dictate to the national team coach.”
