Michael Ennis, the former assistant coach of the Dragons, has expressed his feelings regarding his recent dismissal from the club by interim coach Dean Young, describing the experience as “disappointing”.
Having joined Shane Flanagan’s coaching staff last September, Ennis was informed by Young that he was to be part of the extensive changes being implemented due to the team’s performance.
Ennis, who played under Flanagan in Cronulla’s 2016 premiership-winning squad, was one of his closest allies within the club.
On Thursday night, Ennis appeared on Fox Sports and mentioned that it had been a “difficult” week for him.

He reflected on Flanagan’s departure, stating, “It was disappointing at first. Shane and I share a close bond, and witnessing how challenging this has been for him as a friend, mentor, and exceptional coach was difficult for me.”
Ennis continued, “It was also disappointing speaking with Dean (Young) because coaching is something I am passionate about, and while I understand the club’s need for change given their situation and past results, I still found it hard to accept.”
Despite his feelings, Ennis expressed respect for Young and acknowledged the tough conversations they had.

Ennis acknowledged the talented individuals still at the Dragons, stating, “While the results haven’t been as expected, there’s a great deal of potential there.”
The Dragons will face the Roosters in their upcoming match, which coincides with the traditional Anzac Day clash. There were discussions over the weekend suggesting the club might postpone Flanagan’s dismissal to respect one of the oldest traditions in Australian league.

Looking to make immediate changes, Young also benched Kyle Flanagan shortly after Ennis’s exit, allowing Kade Reed to debut.
Ennis remarked, “Shane had his own style of coaching, and Dean is clearly implementing changes he believes are necessary. He’s coached for a long time, has previously taken on the interim role, and knows these players well, so he understands what needs to be done.”
“I’m keen to see how they perform not just this weekend but for the remainder of the season. I can do no more than wish them the best … I truly hope Dean excels in his role, which I fully believe he will.”
“I sincerely wish them all the best.”
