Kevin Pietersen has reignited his rivalry with former captain Alastair Cook amid ongoing discussions regarding England batter Jacob Bethell’s lack of action in the IPL.
Bethell recently showcased his potential with a remarkable century during the final Ashes Test in Sydney and was subsequently picked by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for this year’s IPL season.
However, with the tournament approaching its midpoint on Saturday, Bethell has yet to make his debut.
On the Stick to Cricket podcast, Cook argued that returning to the UK to play county cricket would be beneficial for both Bethell and the England team.
“He’s not doing anything … ideally, he should come back and open for Warwickshire to help England,” Cook remarked.

However, Pietersen disagreed, retorting on X that remaining in India would ultimately enhance Bethell’s skills.
“Alastair Cook has absolutely NO IDEA what it’s like to experience the IPL or to be constantly surrounded by the world’s top players,” Pietersen remarked.
“Hence, his perspective on Jacob Bethell carries no weight. Stay in India, Jacob. Even without playing, you’re absorbing so much and will emerge as a far superior player.”
Pietersen and Cook’s relationship soured after Cook made the controversial decision to end Pietersen’s England career following the 2013-2014 Ashes series, during which Cook served as captain.
Another user responded to Pietersen’s comment, siding with Cook and questioned what Bethell might be gaining by “sitting idle every game”.
In response, Pietersen provided a detailed list.
“By training alongside the world’s best players. By closely observing these top players. By discussing strategies with the finest coaches.”
“By fostering lifelong friendships with elite players. By becoming familiar with India, making future tours easier to navigate.”
“If you believe playing a county match in Derby in April is superior to his growth, then I’m afraid I can’t assist.”

While Bethell batted at first drop during his ton in Sydney, Cook suggests he might also thrive as an opener.
In a conversation with Sky Sports Cricket, Bethell expressed his firm belief that remaining in India is the right choice, despite receiving minimal game time.
“I feel more confident now than I did a month ago, just from being around the lads here and witnessing the high level of cricket in India and the IPL,” he shared.
“Every nets session has eyes on you—your coaches and fellow players assessing your abilities, asking ‘Is he good? Is he not?’
“With spectators capturing it all on their phones, you’re subject to so many different evaluations.”
