LaLiga leaders Barcelona are preparing for a challenging encounter against Leganes at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque on Saturday, as the home team battles to avoid relegation, according to manager Hansi Flick, speaking the day before the match.
Barcelona have the chance to increase their lead at the top of the table, currently four points ahead of second-placed Real Madrid with eight matches remaining. In contrast, Leganes sit in 18th position with 28 points, just two points adrift of safety.
The Catalan side will be seeking to bounce back from a surprising 1-0 defeat at home to Leganes in December, while the latter have also managed to defeat third-placed Atletico Madrid in January and nearly secured a surprise against Real Madrid, eventually losing 3-2 in March.
“Leganes are a well-defending team and they know how to exploit space in attack. We need to approach this match with caution, bearing in mind our current position at the top. They are in a relegation fight, which will make it a demanding game,” Flick stated to the media on Friday.
“When we discuss our upcoming fixtures, we regard each one as critically important since we only have eight matches left, all of which matter greatly … Our focus must be sharp. It’s essential that we display our strength over the full 90 minutes.
“Our journey began at the start of the season, and we train diligently and with purpose. To become champions, we must demonstrate our quality not only in high-stakes matches but also in games like this one.”
Midfielder Dani Olmo is currently dealing with an adductor injury. Asked about his availability, Flick confirmed: “No, he won’t join the squad for this match. He’ll remain here to rest, train, and recover. Staying here is the best thing for him right now.”
Regarding his contract, the 60-year-old German coach, who previously managed Bayern Munich and the German national team, joined Barcelona in May last year, signing a deal that runs until June 2026.

“I truly value and enjoy my time here … This is a unique experience in my career, as I see an incredible atmosphere in the locker room. It feels like a family … Plus, I really enjoy my experiences at Barcelona,” Flick remarked.
“I have plenty of energy and I’m focused on our potential and how we can enhance our performance as there’s still room for improvement.
“I’m not the type of coach looking to sign a lengthy contract, because that might lead me to think, ‘Well, I have time to improve.’ I prefer to work diligently on a daily basis for this club.
“One year is our current focus, and we’ll see what unfolds. If we continue to be content, we’ll assess the situation later. I’m all about daily progress. My aim is to conclude my work here on a high note.”
