Leeds United have moved a provisional nine points clear of the Premier League (PL) relegation zone following a commanding 3-0 victory over a Wolverhampton Wanderers team teetering on the brink of relegation at Elland Road.
Fresh off a historic win at Old Trafford, Leeds surged into the match with confidence, aiming for that pivotal 40-point barrier. They didn’t take long to strike, taking the lead in the 18th minute.
Demonstrating the same vulnerabilities that have left them on the verge of relegation, Wolves failed to clear an Ao Tanaka corner. After a brief flurry where Noah Okafor was denied, the ball fortuitously fell to James Justin, who executed an overhead kick past the Wolves defence.
The visitors had little time to regroup after conceding their league-leading 24th opening goal before Leeds doubled their lead just two minutes later.
A swift counter-attack down the right flank opened up the Wolves backline, with Brenden Aaronson passing a low ball to the far post, where Okafor—who had already netted twice at Old Trafford just days earlier—scored his fourth goal in five matches within the first half-hour.
It was only at this point that Wolves began to settle slightly and create a few encouraging chances for themselves. However, Leeds ended the first half with a commanding 5-1 advantage in shots on target, solidifying their hold on the match.
Wolves came close to clawing their way back into the contest just after the hour mark when Ladislav Krejci’s header from a corner was comfortably taken by Karl Darlow.
Conversely, Leeds appeared much more composed throughout the second half, clearly mindful of their forthcoming crucial FA Cup semi-final.
The visiting supporters stirred briefly when Adam Armstrong lofted the ball over Darlow in the 83rd minute for what they thought was a consolation goal, but the linesman’s flag dashed their hopes.
Leeds’ best chance in the dying minutes fell to Pascal Struijk, who received a pass and burst towards goal but ultimately sent his powerful strike wide from the edge of the box.
However, Leeds would seal their victory with a third goal when Dominic Calvert-Lewin was brought down in the box by Hugo Bueno, resulting in the World Cup hopeful calmly converting the penalty past a stranded Daniel Bentley.
In reality, Wolves never looked like securing their first away league victory and will officially drop to the second tier if Tottenham defeats Brighton in the evening’s match.
On the other hand, Leeds will revel in the momentum gained ahead of their much-anticipated Wembley clash against Chelsea, marking their fifth consecutive PL victory over Wolves.
