Mid-table side Lorient has officially secured their place in Ligue 1 for the upcoming season following a 2-0 victory over Olympique de Marseille, who now face the risk of dropping out of European qualification spots depending on results this weekend.
Having entered the match following a three-game winless streak (2 draws, 1 loss), Lorient almost went ahead early when Panos Katseris was released with a well-timed ball, forcing a save from Geronimo Rulli. Just moments later, L’OM had their best opportunity of the first half; a looping header landed at the feet of Mason Greenwood, but he was denied by Yvon Mvogo, keeping him just short of closing in on the golden boot.
In front of their home crowd, Lorient appeared the more lively side and took the lead midway through the half when Bamba Dieng expertly controlled a long ball that was deflected into the path of Katseris, who confidently slotted it past Rulli.

Marseille began the second half with an attacking intent, as substitute Timothy Weah, along with Himad Abdelli and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, all had attempts within the opening ten minutes.
However, none could penetrate the Lorient defence, with Mvogo again standing firm. Shortly afterwards, L’OM were punished when Pablo Pagis played a delightful pass into Bamba Dieng, who deftly chipped over Rulli to extend the lead for the hosts.
This marked Dieng’s ninth league goal of the season, surpassing his previous tally with Marseille from earlier in his career.
Pagis nearly added to the scoresheet later on but was thwarted by Rulli, as none of Marseille’s substitutes managed to influence the outcome. Consequently, Marseille slumped to their third defeat in four matches and 10 overall this season.
This defeat highlights their ongoing struggles on the road, marking a fourth loss in their last five away games from Stade Velodrome. Meanwhile, Lorient is now unbeaten in 14 home league matches (8 wins, 6 draws), maintaining their position in ninth place on the table.
