Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia have taken a commanding six-point lead at the top of the FKF Premier League table, pulling ahead of arch-rivals AFC Leopards with a narrow 1-0 victory in the Mashemeji derby held at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.
The 99th encounter between the two illustrious teams attracted a sizeable crowd, with Gor Mahia eager to avenge their previous defeat in the first round, where they succumbed 1-0.
Alongside seeking revenge, Gor Mahia understood that any form of victory would help them maintain their top position and create a six-point buffer over their fierce rivals with just five matches left in the season.
As they approached this highly anticipated clash, Gor Mahia had recorded 17 victories, seven draws, and suffered four losses, while AFC Leopards, under the guidance of former player and current head coach Fred Ambani, had notched up 16 wins, seven draws, and five defeats.
Returning goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi was reinstated into the starting lineup for AFC Leopards, while Gor Mahia’s lineup saw the introduction of Kenya’s national team goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, who replaced Gadd Mathews.
Gor Mahia earned the first corner of the match thanks to Patrick Essombe. Enock Morrison took the corner from the right, but it was successfully cleared by an AFC Leopards defender.
The Gor Mahia side remained in control of the game, with Katasi making two crucial saves to deny AFC Leopards. He first thwarted Adukwaw’s close-range attempt before blocking Essombe’s effort as the home side pressed for the opener.
Shortly after these missed opportunities, Cameroonian Essombe squandered yet another chance, firing directly into Katasi’s grasp despite being well-positioned to score.
AFC Leopards’ midfielder Boniface Munyendo was the first player to receive a yellow card after a reckless challenge.
Gor Mahia were again denied a breakthrough from a corner, as Katasi made an excellent save to keep out Paul Ochuoga’s effort.
The first half concluded with the score locked at 0-0, but Gor Mahia’s coach Charles Akonnor appeared frustrated as he led his side down the tunnel, feeling they should have taken a lead into the break.
At the start of the second half, Ambani made two substitutions, introducing Kelly Madada and Hassan Beja for Munyendo and Ronald Sichenje, while Gor Mahia replaced Adukwaw with Ebenezer Assifuah.
It was Alpha Onyango who delivered the decisive strike, sending Gor Mahia into the lead from outside the box after collecting Bryton Onyona’s cross and firing it into the top left corner.
This hard-earned victory allowed Gor Mahia to solidify their position atop the league standings with 61 points.
Prior to this derby, Gor Mahia had been without a win in their last three matches. They managed a 2-1 victory against Shabana, followed by two draws (0-0) against Kariobangi Sharks and Bandari FC, and a 1-0 loss to Tusker FC.
AFC Leopards, on the other hand, were hoping to bounce back from a 3-0 defeat to champions Kenya Police FC in their previous outing, aiming to return to winning ways in the derby.
Before the loss, AFC Leopards had scored narrow wins against Tusker (1-0), Kariobangi Sharks (1-0), and Murang’a Seal (2-0). Heading into this match, Gor Mahia had previously secured 34 victories, while AFC Leopards had 29, with 35 matches ending in draws over their 98 past encounters.
Last season, their first-round meeting concluded in a 0-0 stalemate, and the return fixture likewise ended in a 1-1 draw. However, in the current campaign, Gor Mahia enjoyed the delight of completing a double over their rivals.
In their first-round encounter, Gor Mahia emerged with a 2-0 win, followed by a 1-0 win in the second round as they marched towards clinching their record 21st league title. This latest win lifted them to 61 points, while AFC Leopards remained on 55 points in second place.
In other league fixtures, APS Bomet edged past Sofapaka with a 1-0 win, while KCB and Kakamega Homeboyz played to a 1-1 draw. Ulinzi Stars achieved a crucial 2-1 win over Bandari, and the match between Shabana and defending champions Kenya Police FC ended in a goalless draw.
Nairobi United secured a 2-1 victory over Mathare United, while Kariobangi Sharks overcame Murang’a Seal with a narrow 1-0 win.
