Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has shared insights from his conversation with Mohamed Salah prior to his imminent departure from the club.
Earlier this season, Salah expressed feelings of disconnect with manager Arne Slot, claiming he had “no relationship” with him and suggesting that “someone” didn’t want him at the club, which left him feeling “thrown under the bus”.
It became apparent that Salah was set to leave this summer, and he revealed last month that he would exit upon the conclusion of his contract—a decision many fans believe is timely.
Gerrard supports the notion that it’s time for the Egyptian international to make a move, discussing the communications they’d had on The Overlap.
“I believe it’s in everyone’s best interests. The timing seems right to me,” Gerrard remarked.
“Particularly given the disagreements he’s had with the manager. I’m not privy to all the details, but his interview was one that I think he may come to regret in the future.”
“I reached out to him around the time of that interview, advising him against leaving on a negative note.”
“He occasionally messages me, or I send him a text, usually when I’m taking Leo somewhere, so that my son can see him.”
“While I’m not particularly close to him, it allowed me the chance to say, ‘You’ve been here for eight or nine years, built this legacy—make sure you leave on your own terms and in a respectful manner.’
Salah is set to part ways with Liverpool at the end of the season, despite having a year remaining on his contract. With increasing links to the Saudi Pro League, the Egyptian forward is weighing his options as he prepares to bid farewell to Merseyside.
