FIFA president Gianni Infantino expressed on Wednesday that Iran will “definitely” be participating in the 2026 World Cup, despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
“Iran will certainly be there. We remain hopeful that the situation will have stabilised by then, which would definitely be beneficial,” Infantino stated during his interview with CNBC.
“It’s essential for Iran to participate; they represent their nation, they have earned their spot, and the players are eager to compete,” he commented regarding the team’s upcoming matches in the United States scheduled for June.
The prospect of Iran’s involvement in the international tournament was cast into doubt following the outbreak of hostilities with the United States and Israel on February 28.
“Sports ought to be kept separate from politics,” Infantino asserted.
“If there’s anyone committed to building bridges and ensuring they remain strong and united, it’s us,” he added.
The World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is set to kick off on June 11.
