FIFA has unveiled the timeline for Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos, along with all 48 participating teams, to finalise their preliminary and ultimate squads for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The outlined timeline offers a clear path towards a squad selection that is sure to spark vigorous discussions, with Broos given the option to choose between 23 and 26 players for his final team.
Logically, it would make sense for him to opt for the maximum number to safeguard against injuries, suspensions, or dips in form. However, Broos appeared somewhat hesitant when questioned about this last month.
He may also be cautious about including ‘passengers’ in the squad—players with slim chances of game time who could potentially disrupt team cohesion.
Broos has until May 13 to submit a provisional squad comprising 35 to 55 players to FIFA.
He must subsequently trim this down to between 23 and 26 players by June 1. As South Africa is set to face co-hosts Mexico in the opening match at the Azteca Stadium on June 11, Broos is keen to establish his squad in their Pachuca training camp beforehand, suggesting an earlier announcement before the team’s departure.
Furthermore, FIFA has confirmed that clubs are obligated to release players for the tournament by May 25. This stipulation means that the South African Betway Premiership cannot extend beyond this date without national team players.
Prior to their second friendly against Panama in Cape Town last month, Broos mentioned that he had already identified 70-75% of his final squad.
“Everything depends a little bit on the condition of the players,” he remarked. “In the coming weeks, they may not play for their clubs anymore, or they could get injured, or experience similar setbacks. But 70-75% of the selection is already clear in my mind and will remain unchanged.”
