Ibrahima Konate asserted that the decision to deny Liverpool a penalty during their 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday was the pivotal moment that led to their exit from the Champions League.
In the second half of the quarter-final second-leg at Anfield, a penalty was awarded to Arne Slot’s team when Alexis Mac Allister went down under pressure from Willian Pacho.
With the match score at 0-0 and PSG leading 2-0 on aggregate, Konate felt that a penalty would have shifted momentum in Liverpool’s direction.
However, VAR stepped in to direct referee Maurizio Mariani to overturn his initial decision.
Liverpool struggled to recover from this critical blow, and Ousmane Dembele’s brace propelled PSG into the semi-finals once more.
“Last season, we had a similar penalty. For me, it was a clear foul, and the referee was right there but didn’t award it, so we have to move on,” Konate remarked following the 4-0 aggregate defeat.
“Had we received the penalty and converted it, the outcome would have been entirely different.”
This marks the second consecutive season that Liverpool has been eliminated from the Champions League by PSG.
Konate noted that Luis Enrique’s side appeared even stronger than last season, yet he firmly believed Liverpool deserved to win the second leg.
“We created numerous chances, and I genuinely think we were the superior team. It felt a bit unjust, much like last season. We had many opportunities but failed to score, while they made the most of their one or two chances,” he commented.
“A lot of things happened, and we mustn’t overlook that. This match was significant because we faced PSG, who are even better than last year; a performance like this shows how good we can be.”
Currently occupying fifth place in the Premier League, with the top five qualifying for the Champions League, Konate urged Liverpool to concentrate on salvaging a disappointing season by clinching a spot in Europe’s premier club competition.
“It’s the bare minimum for Liverpool to be in the Champions League. We have six matches remaining, and we must give our all in those games,” he stated.
Unfortunately, Liverpool may see Hugo Ekitike sidelined for the remainder of the season due to an injury sustained in the first half.
“I believe it’s a serious issue. I’ve heard various things,” Konate shared.
“I can’t find the right words for that situation, especially with the World Cup on the horizon. It’s incredibly tough for him, and I’m sending him my best wishes.”
