Rene Higuita, the legendary former goalkeeper of the Colombian national team and idol of Atletico Nacional, has shared his insights on the current state of the Colombian national team under Néstor Lorenzo. He discusses the scrutiny facing James Rodríguez and reveals his personal favourites for the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
On the 6th of September, Higuita will celebrate his 31st birthday. Coincidentally, it was the same day in 1996 when he executed the famous ‘Scorpion Kick’ save against England, a moment etched in football history. The footballing community is familiar with his ability to change the role of the goalkeeper forever.
Here’s what he had to say regarding Néstor Lorenzo’s squad and the potential for James Rodríguez to feature in the starting line-up.
The Colombian National Team: Néstor Lorenzo and the Significance of James Rodríguez
What are your thoughts on Colombia’s identity and confidence as of late?
“In Colombia, there’s a great deal of optimism about our national team. Naturally, we were disappointed with our performances in the last two outings against France and Croatia, but we have faith in the ability of our squad.”
Can you comment on the performances against France and Croatia? Keeping in mind the stature of those teams, how do you assess those matches?
“We faced two top-tier teams that challenged us to showcase our best. The reality is we didn’t perform to our potential. Nonetheless, we remain supportive of our national team and have faith in our coach. Whenever results aren’t favourable, opinions on the coach come into play—Néstor Lorenzo has been no exception.”
What is your perspective on the current dynamics surrounding the Argentinian coach?
“I believe every process has its phases: matches, qualifications, and the World Cup itself. We’re essentially starting afresh, drawing from the experience of our national team.”
“As former players and fans, we aim to provide constructive feedback and support our team. It’s crucial to maintain unity and foster positive discourse, as it’s already challenging enough to navigate these waters.”
Similarly, there has been considerable discourse surrounding James Rodríguez following the friendlies in March. What’s your take on that?
“Oh dear! We’re speaking of James here. He is an essential player for our national side, and he shouldn’t need to prove himself to validate his contributions. The criticism he’s receiving comes from his limited minutes with Minnesota United.”
“Meanwhile, Díaz is under scrutiny for getting more game time. It leads one to wonder who is truly being understood or valued in this context. Therefore, I prefer to stay cautious and await further developments. Every decision regarding player selection is aimed at assembling the best team to secure victories.”

Now, let’s touch upon Luis Diaz. He seems to be enjoying a significant phase in Europe, having even found the net against Real Madrid recently. Regarding leadership, how do you view Luis’ current standing and who is regarded as the leader within this squad?
“There are several leaders within this national team, with experience spread across different positions. We must trust in the captain at the helm, which is Lorenzo.”
“If Luis Díaz is at the top of his game, then we need to leverage his ability to change the course of matches. That does present a challenge for our coach.”
With your extensive expertise and experience representing Colombia at a World Cup, how do you assess the country’s goalkeeping situation?
“Colombia boasts some excellent goalkeepers: (Alvaro) Montero, David Ospina, Camilo Vargas, (Kevin) Mier, and (Luis) Marquinez are just a few. We have worry-free confidence in our goalkeeping options.”
The World Cup: Contenders and New Football Regulations
Looking ahead to the World Cup, who do you see as contenders?
“Several teams stand out. Observing the Champions League shows a plethora of talents from different nations. Argentina and Qatar 2022 champions can’t be dismissed, nor can France, Germany, Spain, Brazil, and don’t overlook Uruguay; they could surprise us all.”
“I also hold great faith in the Colombian national team.”
If you had to place a bet on a champion, who would it be?
“I’d always back my Colombia team; there’s no question about that. For a runner-up, I would go with France.”
Which goalkeepers do you admire most in the current game?
“Manuel Neuer has shown us great things recently, particularly in his matchup against Real Madrid. Thibaut Courtois is another outstanding keeper I truly admire. However, at present, I’d have to say that Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martinez tops my list.”
Is there a goalkeeper in today’s game you relate to?
“The role of a goalkeeper is crucial as a strong pillar for the team. With football evolving through rules and regulations, a keeper’s role has expanded significantly; their involvement is greater, particularly at the onset of play. If the conditions demand it, they should possess the skills necessary to navigate challenges, not merely risk early ventures.”
“As football progressed, formations changed from five defenders to variations involving a sweeper. Nowadays, some teams adopt three defenders, and attacking players often drop back to defend, resulting in a five-man back line. Our ultimate goal must always be to secure a clean sheet.”
Football is continually evolving. For instance, with hydration breaks and the five-second restart rule being implemented now, how do you perceive these changes?
“All modifications made in favour of the sport are welcome. It’s essential to have referees with authority; that’s a positive shift. Sometimes, the crowd interrupts the flow of the game, and it’s beneficial when the referees maintain their stance on the pitch! A decisive referee is required, as it encourages players to adhere to the rules and fosters a quicker pace of play, which is what we strive for.”
