Phil Gould has raised concerns over why Api Koroisau appears to have “fallen out of favour” with the selectors of the NSW Blues, as discussions intensify regarding the hooker position.
For the last two State of Origin series, Reece Robson has donned the No.9 jersey, but he is now facing competition from Blayke Brailey, who is eager to claim the role this time.
Brailey enjoyed a stellar 2025 season with the Sharks, potentially putting him ahead in the selection race, while Robson’s recent move to the Sydney Roosters keeps him firmly in contention.
Yet, Koroisau seems to have been overlooked, having played just four matches for the Blues and slipping down the selectors’ list since his switch to the Wests Tigers.

Despite this, with his club performing well and Koroisau maintaining strong form, Gould was asked why the hooker’s name isn’t more frequently mentioned alongside his competitors.
“I can’t quite grasp it,” he remarked on Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles With Gus.
“I’m unable to answer; I genuinely don’t know. If it were up to me, he’d be my first pick, but I’m not in charge of selection.
“I can’t comprehend why he’s not favoured anymore; especially considering his long-standing partnership with other Penrith players likely to be in the squad.

“I just don’t understand it, but that’s for the coaches and selectors to decide. I sincerely hope he gets picked, because I believe he’s the top hooker for NSW – but ultimately, that’s not my call.
“The bottom line is that I’m puzzled about why he’s not more prominent. Maybe they lost a game and felt a need for change.
“In my view, he’s among the most consistent and impactful players. He helps to determine the scoreboard, supports teammates, influences his halves, and possesses excellent experience in big matches.
“Honestly, I’m not sure what else they could be considering.”
Gould emphasised that he believes the contrast in prior series has stemmed from the dummy-half position, where Harry Grant has excelled for the Maroons as a valuable attacking asset.
“That position is crucial, especially for Queensland, and I think we’re at a disadvantage by not selecting Api Koroisau,” he stated.
“What they bring from that role compared to what we’re lacking sometimes makes a significant difference in outcomes.”
Koroisau has played a vital part in pushing the Tigers to the top-four in the NRL standings, showcasing his skills as one of the premier hookers in the game, even as he nears 34 later this year.
During an appearance on Nine’s 100% Footy on Monday, the talented Fijian international expressed his eagerness to have another shot at the Origin level.

“I believe every single player eligible would be keen to play,” Koroisau stated.
“If they ever need me again, I’m eager and ready to step up … but it ultimately comes down to how well I’m performing at club level.
“I’ll let my performance do the talking and wait to see what unfolds.”
Koroisau and the impressive Tigers face a challenging encounter in round seven against Brisbane, who will be missing Reece Walsh, Ben Hunt, and Pat Carrigan.
