Kaoru Mitoma’s goal in the 23rd minute marked England’s inaugural loss to an Asian nation, as Japan secured a well-deserved 1-0 victory at a packed Wembley Stadium, extending their winning streak to five matches.
After experimenting with his lineup in Friday’s 1-1 draw against Uruguay, Three Lions manager Thomas Tuchel opted for a more familiar starting eleven in this crucial friendly ahead of the announcement of his FIFA World Cup (WC) squad in May.
There were notable omissions, including captain and all-time top scorer Harry Kane, who was ruled out due to a minor training injury. As a result, Marc Guéhi captained the side for the first time and came close early on, with a header and a shot both blocked in succession during a chaotic set-piece situation for Japan in the 13th minute.
The Japanese side executed a counter-attack with precision, taking the lead when Mitoma stole the ball from Cole Palmer, passed it to Keito Nakamura, and sprinted into the box to connect with the return pass, finishing with a first-time strike.
This goal was Mitoma’s ninth for his country and the first conceded by Jordan Pickford while in goal for England since October 2024.
In response, the hosts struggled to create clear chances, forcing Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki into action only once before the 34th minute, when he made a superb save from Elliot Anderson’s curling shot, deflecting it onto the crossbar. Just before half-time, Ayase Ueda nearly doubled Japan’s lead, striking the crossbar with a deflected effort after exploiting an offside trap.

Following the interval, Japan maintained their momentum, with Ritsu Dōan catching Nico O’Reilly off guard five minutes after the restart, but Pickford was alert at his near post to make the save.
Seeing the need for change, Tuchel made a quadruple substitution just before the hour mark, bringing on Jarrod Bowen, Lewis Hall, Dominic Solanke, and Tino Livramento in place of Palmer, Ben White, Phil Foden, and O’Reilly.
However, the substitutes failed to spark an immediate revival, as Nakamura came close again, cutting inside and curling the ball just past the far post.

Marcus Rashford came on for Anthony Gordon and witnessed his low shot saved by Suzuki with 13 minutes remaining, with Bowen unable to convert the rebound, sending it wide. A header from Harry Maguire was cleared off the line by Yukinari Sugawara, while Morgan Rogers fired over the bar.
Ultimately, the Three Lions were unable to score for the first time since June 2024, resulting in Tuchel’s first defeat at Wembley as England boss in their final friendly before the World Cup.
On the other hand, Japan appear to be in excellent form as they prepare for their eighth consecutive World Cup, having secured two victories against home nations, following their 1-0 triumph over Scotland on Saturday.
