The Netherlands and Ecuador ended their encounter in a 1-1 stalemate after Denzel Dumfries received a swift red card, while Ecuador faced injury worries as goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle was carried off on a stretcher due to a knee injury.
In the wake of their 2-1 victory against Norway on Friday, Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman made seven changes to his line-up, bringing in Mark Flekken, Stefan de Vrij, Nathan Aké, Jerdy Schoute, Quinten Timber, Xavi Simons, and Brian Brobbey for the clash with Ecuador, who secured second place behind Argentina in the South American World Cup qualifying series.
The Netherlands got off to a dream start against their South American rivals when Willian Pacho accidentally diverted a low cross from Cody Gakpo into his own net, giving the hosts an early lead in the third minute.
However, Ecuador responded with determination, coming close to equalising when John Yeboah struck the post after a strong run from Enner Valencia.
The contest displayed end-to-end action as the Oranje nearly doubled their advantage through Donyell Malen, who attempted to capitalise on a poor clearance from goalkeeper Valle. However, LDU Quito’s keeper made a crucial last-ditch save to keep the scoreline at 1-0.
Things turned sour for the Netherlands in the 12th minute when Denzel Dumfries received a straight red card for fouling Yeboah, who was through on goal after outpacing both Stefan de Vrij and Dumfries. This incident also led to early substitutions, with Donyell Malen replaced by Lutsharel Geertruida shortly thereafter.
The match took another dramatic twist when Mark Flekken was penalised for bringing down Eduardo Plata, resulting in a penalty kick. Former West Ham forward Enner Valencia, Ecuador’s all-time leading scorer, took the spot-kick in the 24th minute and skilfully placed it into the bottom corner, narrowly beating Flekken and equalising the match for the visitors.
Despite longing for the half-time whistle, the Netherlands had Flekken to thank for maintaining parity, as he made a critical save to deny Yeboah from giving Ecuador the lead.

The Netherlands modified their approach to a five-man defence following the intermission, with Jeremie Frimpong coming in for Cody Gakpo as the right wing-back. Ecuador, however, faced an early setback in the second half when goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle had to be stretchered off after suffering a potentially serious knee injury in the 56th minute.
The remainder of the second half saw little in the way of scoring opportunities, with Brian Brobbey’s 65th-minute counterattack representing the only significant threat, but his attempt was blocked before it could reach David Cabezas.
With both sides failing to hit the target in the second half, Ronald Koeman’s defensive strategy proved effective. The Netherlands held on to secure a 1-1 draw as Ecuador left Eindhoven without a victory.
