Mostafa Shobeir elevated his candidacy for Egypt’s top goalkeeper position ahead of the 2026 World Cup by producing a series of crucial saves during a 0-0 stalemate against Spain, who have lost their status as the world’s highest-ranked team.
As both teams prepared for one of their final fixtures before the World Cup begins, players were eager to make their mark.
Pedro Porro had a fierce effort blocked in the opening minute, but Egypt responded swiftly, nearly catching David Raya off guard with a long-range attempt from Mohanad Lasheen.
Further opportunities then fell to the hosts, who had to relocate the match from Qatar to the outskirts of Barcelona at short notice, but solid defensive efforts kept Shobeir’s involvement to a minimum.
In terms of chances and possession, the teams were fairly evenly matched, yet it was Egypt who had the clearest opportunity of the half.

In the absence of Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush displayed his skills by evading defenders at the edge of the box, only to see his well-placed shot strike the post.
Egypt’s persistent efforts were evident again just before halftime when Hamdy Fathy made a crucial intervention to thwart Ferran Torres from scoring a straightforward tap-in.
Spain made multiple attacking substitutions at the interval, which initially gave them a stronger presence, but Shobeir was resolute. Fermín López found space in the area but saw his shot slightly diverted wide by a fingertip save from the Egyptian keeper.
Shobeir then denied Pedri on two occasions, before Cristhian Mosquera headed just over from a cross by Dani Olmo.
Late in the match, Spain’s chances of clinching a win received a boost when Fathy received a second yellow card for a foul on Borja Iglesias, following a sarcastic applause directed at the referee.

Shobeir had to make one last impressive save, deflecting Alejandro Grimaldo’s free-kick onto the crossbar, ensuring the match ended goalless.
This draw extends Spain’s unbeaten streak to an impressive 28 matches; however, they’ll need to elevate their performance if they’re aiming to surpass their quarter-final exits in the last three tournaments.
For Egypt, their focus remains on clinching their inaugural World Cup victory, having made only their second appearance at the finals since 1990.
