With Newcastle United facing a tough battle to secure a top-seven finish in the Premier League this season, the prospect of the Magpies missing out on European football for the 2026/27 campaign looms large.
However, with six matches remaining, there’s still time for Eddie Howe’s men to clinch as many of the 18 available points as they can.
Newcastle’s European ambitions in jeopardy
Currently, the North East club finds itself five points adrift of Brentford, who sit in seventh place—the position that offers a path to the Conference League. They trail Chelsea by six points, who occupy sixth spot (Europa League qualification), and Liverpool by ten points, who are in fifth (Champions League place).
To improve their chances of another continental campaign, Newcastle must finish the season strongly. A failure to do so could result in a range of difficulties for the club.

If they fail to achieve this goal, one possible outcome could be the departure of top scorer Anthony Gordon.
Although the former Everton player has often been the subject of transfer speculation, he has so far remained at St. James’ Park.
However, the absence of European football might weigh heavily on his mind, as well as that of his teammates, especially if they wish to maintain their spots in their national teams.
Bayern Munich interested in Anthony Gordon
Sources suggest that Vincent Kompany, the former Manchester City captain now managing Bayern Munich, has shown a keen interest in Gordon and may pursue a transfer for him this summer.
If Newcastle cannot secure a spot in the EPL’s top seven, it could lower Gordon’s market value, but club CEO David Hopkinson has made it clear that the Magpies will not be cornered in the transfer market.
“We are considering what players might or might not want to do this summer,” he stated in March. “However, if a situation similar to Isak arises, any player under contract will leave on our terms, enabling us to maximise any opportunity that may benefit the club.
“In the future, our strategy will focus on making smart purchases and securing profitable sales.”
Top statistics in his position
It’s easy to see why Bayern and other clubs are monitoring the 25-year-old, and Hopkinson’s comments suggests that certain players might be made available for transfer.
So far in the 2025/26 season, Gordon has featured 46 times across all competitions, netting 17 goals and assisting five, while also striking the woodwork three times—leading the Newcastle squad in these statistics.

All of Gordon’s 17 goals have come from inside the penalty area, with 15 scored using his right foot. He boasts a remarkable shot accuracy of 62.1%—the highest in the squad.
His 19.5% conversion rate is only surpassed by Nick Woltemade’s 20.8%, while his 10 fast breaks rank just behind Harvey Barnes, making them the only players to reach double digits in this category.
No other player has matched Gordon’s 41 shots on target or 31 big chances created. He maintains a big chance conversion rate of 51.6%, and he is unblemished with a perfect record from the penalty spot (nine attempts, nine goals).
Potential partnership with Kane
While his pass completion rate of 81.8% is decent, it falls short compared to his Newcastle counterparts, indicating room for improvement. This attribute will be vital as he adapts to a Bayern team filled with stars.
Gordon is not one to shy away from a challenge—he leads the Magpies with 318 one-on-one attempts, and his tackle success rate of 63% (17 successful tackles from 27 attempted) sees him ranked among the top performers.
In a high-paced team like Bayern, one can only envision how seamlessly Gordon would integrate, allowing him to focus on his natural talents while also establishing a potentially lethal partnership with Harry Kane, benefiting both players considerably.
For now, Gordon and his fellow Newcastle players must dig deep to push for a European spot.
The remaining fixtures against Bournemouth, Arsenal, Brighton, Nottingham Forest, West Ham, and Fulham could prove critical for concluding the season on a positive note, given their current challenges.
These six matches could not only define Gordon’s personal future but significantly influence the path of Newcastle as a club…
