With Newcastle United potentially facing challenges in securing a top-seven finish in the Premier League this season, the prospect of European football for the Magpies in the 2026/27 campaign is increasingly uncertain.
However, the season is far from over, and with six matches remaining, Eddie Howe will be urging his team to capitalise on the full 18 points on offer.
The Challenge of European Football for Newcastle
Currently, the North East club sits five points adrift of Brentford, the team in seventh place who hold the ticket to the Conference League. They’re six points behind Chelsea, who are positioned sixth and currently qualify for the Europa League, and a daunting ten points off Liverpool in fifth, which grants access to the Champions League.
A strong finish to the season is essential for the Magpies if they hope to keep their chances of European competition alive, as failing to secure a place could lead to significant dilemmas for the club.
This predicament could lead to the departure of their leading Champions League scorer, Anthony Gordon. Although the former Everton star has been pursued in the transfer market previously, he’s remained committed to St. James’ Park thus far.
However, the absence of European fixtures is a concern for both him and his teammates, particularly as they look to secure places in their national squads.
Bayern Munich Takes an Interest in Anthony Gordon
Reports indicate that ex-Manchester City captain and current Bayern Munich manager, Vincent Kompany, holds a strong admiration for Gordon and may be eyeing a summer bid for his services.
If Newcastle fails to secure a top-seven finish in the Premier League, it could diminish Gordon’s market value; nevertheless, CEO David Hopkinson has made it clear that the club will not be forced into any decisions in the transfer window.
“We consider what players may wish to do this summer,” he remarked in March. “But if a situation akin to Isak presents itself again, any player under contract will depart on our terms, allowing us to fully leverage the opportunity for the club.”
“Our future strategy is focused on making wise purchases and ensuring successful sales.”
Statistical Highlights: Goals, Shots, and Chances
It’s no surprise that Bayern and other clubs are keen on the 25-year-old, particularly with Hopkinson’s comments suggesting that certain players could be up for grabs.
So far in the 2025/26 season, Gordon has racked up 46 appearances across all competitions, netting 17 times and assisting five goals (and hitting the woodwork three times), the highest tally within the Newcastle squad.
All 17 of his goals have come from inside the box, with 15 being scored with his right foot. Furthermore, Gordon boasts an impressive shot accuracy of 62.1%, the highest in the squad.
His conversion rate of 19.5% is surpassed only by Nick Woltemade’s 20.8%, with the pair leading the way in fast breaks, as Gordon has achieved ten compared to Harvey Barnes’ eleven.
No player has recorded more shots on target than Gordon’s 41, and he leads the squad with 31 created big chances. His conversion of these opportunities stands at 51.6%, the best of the team, and he remains flawless from the penalty spot with a perfect record of nine from nine.
Potential Partnership with Kane
While Gordon’s 81.8% pass completion rate is solid, among his Newcastle teammates it falls slightly short of the mark, indicating room for improvement if he hopes to thrive in a high-calibre Bayern side.
However, he is not afraid of taking on challenges, evidenced by the fact that only six of his teammates have engaged in more one-on-ones than his tally of 318, while his tackle success rate of 63% (17 out of 27 attempted) places him among the top ten.
One can only speculate how seamlessly Gordon would adapt to a squad as dynamic as Bayern’s, where he will likely enjoy less pressure to shoulder the scoring burden and could forge a fruitful partnership with Harry Kane, benefitting both players immensely.
For now, Gordon and his Newcastle teammates must channel their efforts to secure a European spot as they face Bournemouth, Arsenal, Brighton, Nottingham Forest, West Ham, and Fulham in the final stretch of the season.
These six matches could not only determine Gordon’s future but also shape the trajectory of Newcastle United as a club moving forward…
