Barcelona’s head coach Hansi Flick has defended the use of the video assistant referee (VAR) after Rayo Vallecano expressed their frustration over a series of contentious decisions during their LaLiga clash on Monday.
Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski netted the decisive goal from the spot in the first half, following an extensive VAR review that overturned the referee’s initial oversight of a foul in the penalty area.
Rayo also raised their voices after being denied a penalty kick and felt aggrieved when Jorge de Frutos’ goal was disallowed in the 42nd minute, which they believed was an unfair call.
“I haven’t rewatched the incidents, but I will always support VAR. We have it in place, and I have faith in its capability; that’s all I can say,” Flick remarked when speaking to Movistar Plus.
“We’re very pleased to secure the three points because it was a challenging match against a formidable opponent. Rayo are in good form and playing exceptionally well. The game was a tough test for the players, and I take great pride in their effort.“
These events have only fuelled the ongoing discussion surrounding officiating in Spain, especially as Barcelona’s rivals Real Madrid continue to clash with both the Spanish FA and LaLiga.
With Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid both dropping points over the weekend, Monday’s result enabled Barcelona to ascend to the top of the table. They are currently level on 51 points with Real, but they lead on goal difference.
Atletico sit just a point behind, while Rayo, having suffered their first league defeat since early December, are positioned sixth with 35 points.
“Everyone is in good spirits, and while I think our performance was solid, there’s certainly room for improvement. Achieving a victory here today and moving to the top spot is a significant milestone for us,” said Flick.
“That said, I’m not one to obsess over the standings; we are only in February and there’s still a long season ahead. I’m just pleased with the players’ mentality—they are committed to fighting to the end, and we will focus on one match at a time.“
