Catch all the action from an exhilarating Isuzu UTE A-League encounter at McDonald Jones Stadium.
Midfielder Louis Verstraete received a straight red card as ten-man Auckland FC battled to a 1-1 draw against the Newcastle Jets, who have been in impressive form at McDonald Jones Stadium.
Aiming for their fourth consecutive league win for the first time since 2009, Newcastle started with a bang, as winger Eli Adams netted a stunning solo effort just 12 minutes into the match.
Things could have improved even further for the Jets, but Auckland goalkeeper Alex Paulsen pulled off a spectacular save, denying Kosta Grozos’ penalty in the 20th minute following a handball by Nando Pijnaker in the box.
Despite generating multiple scoring opportunities, the Jets conceded in the 37th minute when Auckland forward Jesse Randall scored with a well-placed header from a precise cross by captain Hiroki Sakai.
Verstraete was shown a red card in the 75th minute after catching Newcastle’s Charles M’Mombwa high on the leg with his studs during a midfield challenge.
This result leaves Steve Corica’s side six points ahead of second-placed Western United at the top of the table, after recording their second draw in as many matches.
On the other hand, Rob Stanton’s team finds themselves nine points adrift of the finals spots and will shift their focus to an upcoming clash against Melbourne City on Wednesday night.
Looking to strike early, the Jets surged forward in the 10th minute and nearly opened the scoring. Fortunately for Auckland, Lachie Rose’s delicate effort clipped the roof of the net.
In response, Black Knights defender Pijnaker narrowly missed with a header from a corner, but the home side were full of enthusiasm and soon seized the lead with a sensational goal.
Collecting the ball deep in his own half, Adams sprinted towards the Auckland area, outpacing midfielder Felipe Gallegos before unleashing an unstoppable left-footed shot that sailed past Paulsen into the far corner.
Almost immediately after, the young winger came close to scoring a second but misfired, pulling his shot wide as the Jets had the league leaders on the ropes, with a knockout seemingly imminent.
In an unfortunate twist, Pijnaker, losing sight of a cross into the box, inadvertently handled it while contesting with Mark Natta, leading the referee to point to the spot.
However, when given the chance to double the lead, captain Grozos’ penalty was expertly saved by Paulsen, frustrating the Jets. Minutes later, Auckland thought they had equalised.
Receiving a well-timed pass from Moreno, Jesse Randall curled a sublime shot past Jets keeper Noah James, only to be denied by the offside flag for mistiming his run.
As the visitors began to find their rhythm, Rob Stanton’s young Jets continued to create opportunities, with Callum Timmins coming close to extending the lead to 2-0.
However, while Newcastle missed their chance, Auckland found the equaliser shortly after.
After a splendid turn in midfield, striker Guillermo May played the ball out to Sakai on Auckland’s right flank, and the Black Knights captain delivered an exquisite left-footed cross that Randall headed home to level the score at 1-1.
Unhappy with his team’s first-half showing, Auckland coach Corica made changes at halftime, bringing on Verstraete and Marlee Francois. However, it was the home team that nearly restored their advantage first.
Avoiding a potential error while clearing the ball, Paulsen showed his reflexes with a brilliant save, tipping Lachlan Bayliss’ shot around the post.
Substitute Francois, keen to make an impact, tested Jets keeper James with a solid effort as Auckland ramped up the pressure.
In the 65th minute, Paulsen faced a risky moment when he misjudged a header from Adams, fumbling the ball on his own goal line but avoiding disaster.
Auckland’s quest for victory took a hit in the 75th minute, as substitute Verstraete received his marching orders.
Initially booked for a challenge on M’Mombwa, referee Nathan Shakespear was called to review the incident, leading to Verstraete’s yellow card being upgraded to red after replays showed a high tackle.
Even with ten players, Auckland continued to press forward, getting the ball in the net through Tommy Smith, but the goal was disallowed after it was deemed he used his arm to guide it in.
As the away side fought for a late winner, hearts raced in the dying moments when Jets captain Grozos struck a free-kick just over the bar—the last kick of the match.
This result leaves Auckland six points clear of second-placed Western United after back-to-back draws.
Meanwhile, the Jets missed the chance to secure four consecutive victories for the first time since 2009, finding themselves in ninth place and nine points adrift of a finals spot.
