A return to his roots is on the horizon for Robin Olsen, the Aston Villa and Sweden goalkeeper, as he looks set to make his way back to Malmö when his contract at Villa Park concludes at the end of the season, as reported by Swedish publication Sportbladet.
During the latest international break in March, the experienced keeper hinted at the possibility of a return to Sweden, although concrete plans were yet to be established.
Sources also suggested that lately, a move back to either Malmö or one of his former clubs, FC Copenhagen, had been under consideration, with the Danish club previously having a significant bid rejected last summer.
However, the pull of home seems to have proven too compelling, and the 35-year-old is poised to return to the club where he kickstarted his youth career and played professionally from 2012 to 2015.
Sportbladet indicates that a preliminary agreement is in place, but official confirmation will only be possible once the transfer window opens in July.
Since leaving MFF in 2015, Olsen has not featured in the Allsvenskan, having since represented PAOK, Copenhagen, Roma, Cagliari, Everton, Sheffield United, and, since 2022, Aston Villa, where he has served as backup to Emiliano Martinez and has made 21 appearances across all competitions.
This season, he has made four appearances, three of which were in the Premier League, but he hasn’t been part of Villa’s journey to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
Last month, Olsen earned his 76th cap for the national team, surpassing the number of matches he played for Malmö, during which he celebrated two Allsvenskan championship victories.
Malmö have had a disappointing start to their title defence in 2025, enduring a 2-0 defeat to Hammarby on Wednesday, which extended their winless streak to three matches.
Currently, Brazilian goalkeeper Ricardo Friedrich is stepping in for the injured Johan Dahlin, who was a teammate of Olsen during his previous stint at the club.
