Enzo Fernandez’s header in the first half propelled Chelsea, now managerless, into the FA Cup final, where they are set to meet Manchester City. The Blues secured a 1-0 victory over Leeds United at Wembley Stadium, achieving success in 13 of their last 16 semi-finals in this prestigious tournament.
This match marked Chelsea’s first outing after sacking their manager, Liam Rosenior, on Wednesday, following a disappointing spell of seven losses in eight games (W1). Interim head coach Calum McFarlane had the challenging task of revitalising the team against a Leeds outfit that had remained undefeated in their last seven encounters (W4, D3).
McFarlane would have been pleased with the team’s confident start, but it was Leeds who had the first significant opportunity in the 15th minute. Brenden Aaronson found himself one-on-one but was thwarted by a swift save from Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez, who used his boot to deny the forward.
Chelsea’s leading scorer, Joao Pedro (G19), made his return to the starting XI after missing the last two matches due to injury. He came close to opening the scoring when his shot struck the inside of the post from a tight angle.
Having failed to find the net in their prior three outings, Chelsea broke their scoring drought in the 23rd minute. Pedro Neto delivered a cross for the unmarked Fernandez, who nodded in his 13th goal of the season across all competitions – a welcome return to form for the skipper following his omission by Rosenior last month, which stemmed from comments regarding his future at Stamford Bridge.
This was Leeds’ first FA Cup semi-final appearance since 1987, and it appeared the occasion may have overwhelmed some of their players, as Chelsea definitely earned their half-time advantage.

In response, Leeds manager Daniel Farke made two substitutions at half-time, shifting to a back four to try and alter the match’s course, bringing on Anton Stach and Joe Rodon in place of James Justin and Jaka Bijol.
Stach nearly levelled the score with his very first touch, unleashing a powerful shot from outside the box that Sanchez needed to parry over the bar. Shortly after, Pedro failed to connect properly from close range, letting a golden opportunity slip by as the ball rolled wide.
Leeds began to pose a greater threat, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header going straight to Sanchez moments later.
Despite a more robust performance in the second half, the Whites couldn’t manage to find an equaliser, marking their third consecutive 1-0 defeat in visits to the new Wembley.
Their wait for an FA Cup final appearance since 1973 continues, while Chelsea, eight-time FA Cup winners, have a chance to redeem themselves by claiming silverware come the final on May 16. They remain unbeaten against Leeds in this competition, with a record of W7, D3.
